In 1979, Steve Winwood joined Pierre Moerlen's Gong for one album along with Mike Oldfield of "Tubular Bells" fame (guitar, solina strings, bass & Irish drum) and Frenchman Benoît Moerlen on vibraphone. Steve plays clavinet, Moog and the Tom Tom solo in the middle.

Breakthrough solo success finally came for Steve in 1980 with the release of his second solo album, Arc of a Diver. Unlike the previous effort that had featured a multitude of stars and studio musicians, the album was performed entirely by Winwood. It featured Winwood's first solo hit, "While You See a Chance" (which peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States), and was Winwood's true emergence as a solo artist. The LP peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200 album chart, establishing him as a commercially viable act.

In 1982, Winwood hit again with "Still in the Game" and "Valerie" from the album, Talking Back to the Night, but the later reached only #80 in the US and #13 in the UK that year, but in 1987 at the peak of his solo success "Valerie" was re-released and reached #2 on the US Adult Contemporary charts, #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #19 on the UK Mainstream Rock Tracks Chart. In 1988, "Talking Back to the Night" re-emerged to reach #17 in the UK and #57 on the Billboard Pop Singles Charts, largely propelled by the success of his fourth solo album, Back in the High Life, which spawned three more hit singles and 1988's Roll with It album whose title song hit #1 on multiple charts. Another song from the album "Don't You Know What the Night Can Do?" had been written by Winwood to be featured in an ad campaign for Michelob Beer which run constantly on American television in the summer of '88.
