As second quarter fundraising reports start to trickle in, the Obama campaign is already warning that it may have lost its edge in the campaign money wars.
Publicly, the campaign has tried to turn its fundraising disadvantage into a political opportunity, raising the reliable specters of Karl Rove and the Koch brothers to scare liberal donors into forking over more cash. On Friday, the President, basking in the glow of his Obamacare win, called some of his top 2008 donors from Air Force One to beg for more money.
"Im asking you to meet or exceed what you did in 2008, Obama said, according to the Daily Beast. Because were going to have to deal with these super PACs in a serious way. And if we dont, frankly I think the political [scene] is going to be changed permanently. Because the special interests that are financing my opponents campaign are just going to consolidate themselves.
Theyre gonna run Congress and the White House. But even beyond the scare tactics, Democratic strategists and money men privately told Business Insider that they are increasingly concerned about whether their candidate can compete with outside conservative groups, who are expected to raise a combined $1 billion in their push to take back the White House.
In interviews with Business Insider, several Democratic fundraisers outlined several obstacles hampering the Obama's money-making efforts.
First, Democrats have had difficulty reigniting 2008 enthusiasm among many supporters, forcing the campaign's finance team to spend resources finding and cultivating untapped donors.
More problematically, Democrats have struggled to convince donors that Mitt Romney is a real threat, especially after this year's Republican primary circus.
According to one Obama fundraiser, this problem has been compounded by the campaign's initial chest-thumping over its grassroots fundraising machine,

Seems like all of those rich people Obama and his buddies in Occupy have been bashing as enemies of the state are suddenly paying attention to him. That or he’s been so successful at ‘Change’ that there aren’t enough wealthy Dhimmocrats to finance him anymore.
What happened to those billions of dollars of laundered TARP money? Don’t tell me Corzine got it all.
Oh bull. He probably embezzled $1B already from the Treasury.
“On Friday, the President, basking in the glow of his Obamacare win, called some of his top 2008 donors from Air Force One to beg for more money”
Isn’t that illegal?
It's pretty amusing how this writer can't keep her political views to herself.
It seems like the Chinese, Russians, Saudis, Iranians, and Islamists would show some gratitude for what he has done and what he plans to do for them!
What are all those campaign flights on AF One worth? What is the value of all that slanted News coverage that Obama benefits from on both broadcast & cable News?
I guess Obama only knows 1 way to campaign: drown your opponent with superior monetary resources.
Does this tell me that one George Soros realizes that Obama is becoming a liability? Soros could flood a huge amount of money through the Super PAC’s he controls, but I’m sure he realizes he may be throwing money down a financial sinkhole.
How ironic considering early Rat boasts about Obama running a billion $$$$$ campaign this year.
I think the real power brokers got what they wanted from zero and are throwing him under the bus. That would include Soros. They are on to another phase now, one that Romney can do for them. They selected zero, used him, and have now selected Romney like they selected Mccain. We get to think that we have some political choices, and that we have two major political parties.
Where did Romney get the money to outspend Gingrich by 65-1 in the Florida primary? (Then barely edge Gingrich out by a few percentage points).
According to an article the other day there is a separate phone on AF1 which is billed to the campaign.
Do a bridal registry at A-1 Septic Service and send Obama the gift he really deserves.
It doesn’t matter. He is on taxpayer’s time as if he were in the oval office. It is unseemly if not illegal.
Romney won by just over 14% - that's a lot more than a few percentage points.
Obama’s billionaire supporters are still lurking behind the scenes.
Uh, Romney had a long-running political machine in place and was not dependent upon the spur-of-the moment, slap-dash operation Newt relied on. Who was going to contribute large sums to that?
And “No” Soros is not supporting Romney. Nor did he support McCain. He doesn’t have to, knowing as everyone does that the Right cannot unify behind a conservative to win the nomination. That is why McCain and Romney won the nominations.
