A yacht full of fireworks watchers capsized off New York's Long Island on the Fourth of July, killing three people and sending 24 others into the Long Island Sound, where many were rescued by fellow boaters, police said Thursday.
The three dead were recovered from the water near Oyster Bay after a long overnight search, said Nassau County Deputy Inspector Kenneth Lack.
"Tragically three people were killed in this boating accident," he told reporters. He would not release the ages of the victims. Several media outlets reported that children were onboard.
Preliminary causes for the accident "could be a combination of the weather and a wake from another vessel," Lack said. He said investigators will be looking at possible overcrowding on the vessel.
Newsday reported that up to 27 people were aboard the 34-foot Silverton to watch the fireworks. It said the missing people could include children.

No S**t Sherlock?
It was reported this morning that the dead were kids.
possible
Big wakes can be dangerous.
Wake makers should be held responsible for the damage they do.
From the NY Post article:
“A nearby boater, Sam Galasso, said: A friend of mine was in my boat and shined a spotlight on them because their boat was getting close to us. Then we saw them take a sharp left and it flipped.”
Thank goodness there were other boats in the area. it could’ve been a lot worse.
None of the passengers was wearing a life jacket, said Barbone.
real bad..greed mixed with stupidity = disaster.
27 people on a boat that should only hold maybe 12 — all leaning to one side — add a wave and — disaster.
27 people 10 life vest
ages12,11,8. 2 girls, 1 boy, no “same” last name (Newsday)
So then max capacity was 10 — and they had 27 on board.
And in other news, the people who died when they rolled their SUV were not wearing seat belts.
Looks like that’s mere speculation by the CG. It’s a good guess but I didn’t see an actual count.
How so? I didn’t see anything about it being a commercial vessel carrying passengers for hire. As a one time yacht captain I can assure you most real captains would not have been so irresponsible.
You ARE responsible for damage done by your wake. In this case though, even if a wake was involved, the operator of the boat generating the wake was probably doing nothing wrong. The Silverton was grossly overloaded and needed very little provocation to become a disaster. Silvertons aren’t the most sea worthy boats out there even in the best of conditions.
Tragic stupidity. Odds are the “captain” will face charges.
