Presbyterians still divided on same-sex unions

Same-sex marriage continues to be a major dividing point among members of the Presbyterian Church (USA) as the issue moves closer to a vote this week by the denomination’s governing body.

The 220th General Assembly is expected to address the subject of gay marriage and the church before its biennial conference wraps up on Saturday in the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Downtown. Groups on opposing sides of the debate met separately on Tuesday as the church’s committee on Civil Union and Marriage Issues considered proposals both for and against gay marriage.

A church survey released in February showed that 51 percent who participated opposed gay marriage.

“Love is not limited by gender or race,” said Michael Adee, executive director of More Light Presbyterians, a pro-gay group within the church that sponsored a luncheon and panel discussion on marriage equality in the Westin Hotel. “We stand on the right side of love, on the right side of history.”

For conservative Presbyterians, the church, which is the largest Presbyterian denomination in the United States, already is on the right side.

“Those people who don’t believe what Jesus has to say and do not follow him have a very serious fate in store for them,” said Phil Chatman, 79, of Westminster, Calif., who attended a luncheon sponsored by OnebyOne, a group of “ex-gay” Presbyterians.

Can anybody name a single denomination which ever gained membership as a result of embracing homo marriage?

It isn't about promoting "tolerance" or "love" or "doctrinal harmony" or "modernization" or any of the other excuses given. It is about hollowing out as many Christian denominations as possible so they are left broken, disunited and less able to combat the Satanic agenda of the left.

Adee's asinine statement could just as easily be made in support of marriage among threesomes, humans and animals and pedophilia.

I would have to agree, but marriage is a gift from God and it is limited to a union between a man and a woman.....

I am certain PCUSA will allow gay marriage......PC also stands for Political Correct....

What does the Bible say about it or to the Presbyterian Church is it more important just to decide issues all on their own?

I used to be Presbyterian however I didn't agree with them when they donated money to the Angela Davis defense fund.

I prefer to stand on the right side of God.

FWIW, I left the ELCA for similar reasons: plenty of money to help Somali Muslims colonize Minnesota and Maine; no resources to spare for Sudanese Christians in Darfur.

So, please tell us of your private revelation from God wherein he gave us his opinion.

LOL! The last time God made a rather dramatic revelation on the topic is recorded in Genesis 19.

All the people of Sodom voted in favor of same-sex unions and only six people voted against it. God had no respect whatsoever for the decision of the overwhelming majority, did he?

Presbyterians may be divided but God isn't.So that must logically bring us to the question "just how many Presbyterians are actually Christians?"

We stand on the right side of love.

Here is the Bible's definition of love:
"By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments." 1 John 5:2

Here is one of the commandments:
". . for you know what commandments we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality." 1 Thess 5:2-3.

Like most sophists gays and their proponents misuse language; i.e. prating they exhibit “Love.” Well one “Loves” one’s dog but one does not marry it!

Mmmm.... I can't answer for "reflecting," the FReeper you addressed, but God's judgment on this is strikingly consistent in the Bible from cover to cover. There's lots of sex in the Bible, some pretty explicit and some disturbingly transgressive: but there isn't a single instance of sexual inercourse in the marital/procreative form which is ever condemned; there isn't a single instance of sexual intercourse in the nonmarital/nonprocreative form which is ever blessed.

Look. The Bible is a pretty complicated library of books, 72 in all by the count of the oldest historic Christian churches, and spanning nearly 80 human authors on three continents over a period of 800 years. That kind of consistency across cultures and genres and highly varied human circumstances is pretty remarkable.

If the Bible is, as its expositors say, God-inspired, then it's fair to say that on this topic, the divine point of view is settled.

Gee, I wonder why ex-gay is in parentheses but gay is not.

Please remember that not all Presbyterians are liberal. Presbyterian Church-USA (PC-USA) is extremely liberal. There are several conservative Presbyterian denominations, such as Presbyterian Church of America (PCA), Orthodox Presbyterian to name a couple, and there is no controversy in these denominations over homosexuality.
