They occur enough in North America.
Interesting watching a documentary about England last night, they mentioned that in the early 1300s England experienced a mini-ice age....which resulted in failed crops and hordes of starving people. They still don't know what caused it. Because it came on so quickly. At various times in other parts of Europe during the last millenium, abnormally cold weather caused failed crops and starvation. Which means the earth can heat up or cool quickly in a very short time for reasons scientists cannot explain. Although many ahem "experts" attempt to do so.
Thanks for the link, that was interesting. I guess we don’t get Derechos here in the Sierra of Eastern California but we do get extremely high winds that seem to come out of nowhere. Last Winter strong hurricane force winds came through knocking down hundreds of huge lodgepole pine trees, winds were clocked at 90 mph with some gusts over 150 mph. The Forest Service is still trying to clean up the mess and clear trails of fallen trees.

I’m sitting here, looking out the window, seeing the snow on the mountain north of us. We had a low of 34 degrees this morning and it’s only 39 right now. Still haven’t put away my winter clothes. This is in NE Washington state.
It was 85 at 9:30 this morning, here in Northern Ohio.We have a heat wave and a drought here,I’ve seen worse. The field corn here has just started to tassle, pollination stage will be soon.If we don’t get some rain during that period,it will be a real problem.

Most of these twits test out as being bi-polar.That makes the blending easy.
