Newt Gingrich issued a warning, based on the destructive storms that hit the Washington, D.C. area over the weekend, on Twitter:

At this point I’m a lot less concerned about an EMP than I am the continued closure of coal fired power plants.
I had power outages 2 days in a row last week and we didn’t even have any storms.
I saw this TV series already. Jericho
JJ Abrams is doing a similar one I’m the fall. Revolution.
Yep. Except the cars still work.
I wonder how all those Volts are working out for everyone in DC right now?
I would rather see Newt as Secretary of State, to clean out the nest of vipers in that godforsaken anti-American/pro-Arab hellhole.
John Bolton = National Security Advisor
David Petraeus = current SecDef = continue as SecDef
James Woolsey = returns as CIA Director
There are some of my thoughts on appointments IF we have a regime change this coming November.
Certain dirk bikes will survive EMPs. Not much else.
look at all the idiot preppers eating and drinking while us smart people are standing in line waiting for the govt to feed us.
My older John Deere tractors with ignition points should be ok.The newer equipment will all be toast.
Interesting ‘freudian slip’. Are you JJ Abrams? ... Keep us Freepers updated on Revolution. Sounds ‘poignant’ now that the collapse is within sight.
I think DC power removal can only be for the good
Having Gorbull warming flooding DC and returning it to the sea couldn’t ‘hoit ‘ either.
Petraeus cannot be SecDef until September of 2021; National Security Act of 1947.
I’m saving my old Model-T ignition coil just in case.
btw, Petraeus is not SecDef he is head of the CIA. Leon Panetta is SecDef.
I have two ancient rototillers that will still work. The Techumseh was made around 1947. The old Troybuilt, sometime in the late 50s.
Okay, except Petraeus is not Sec of Def.
Newt, if you put it out on Twitter how do you expect they are gonna read it?
[ I saw this TV series already. Jericho

Never got into LOST, but I absolutely love Fringe and Alcatraz (sadly it was cancelled).
Looking forward to “Revolution” I hope they don’t “V” if it gets too “Political” like they did with V when they fired the producer because he made allusions to “Hope and change”.
Didn’t it leak out that the study of such an event concluded that 80% of the people east of the Mississippi would be dead in a year?
[ My older John Deere tractors with ignition points should be ok.The newer equipment will all be toast. ]
Older Deer Diesel Tractors will be fine too, an diesel tractor that has a “Manual Fuel Shutoff” will be fine as well. They only have basic electrica switches and an EMP isn’t going to destroy Lead Cell batteries and starter relays.
I grew up driving a “4020” on the farm, farmgirl at heart.
Hey, you know what? Try it for eight days in December with temps never going above 20 F and THEN I will have sympathy!
Cars can survive lightning hits, they’ll probably be OK in an EMP.
I wonder if you could even charge one off a generator that didn't have really clean power? (((ping)))
By the end of the news cycle today, that comment will morph into an actual EMP attack.
By the end of the week Al Jeezera will morhp it into a zionist/US attack to itself and finally it will morph into Bush's fault.
Last week, with temperature in Dallas 104, our 1998 Mercedes E320 died at a traffic light. The engine cranked normally but would not fire. Had it towed to our independent shop, and the mechanic diagnosed the problem without even looking at the computer readout. Failure of the "crankshaft position sensor", which he says happens all the time and frequently shows up in hot weather. It's a very small electronic gadget that sits on the bell housing near the rear of the engine. If I'm not mistaken, it does what the "distributor rotor" used to do back in the 20th century, but it now costs $300 to replace.
I imagine an EMP would wipe it out also, along with most of the car's other electronic conveniences.
I mean seriously, a Land Hurricane?!?
Strong reason to DownSize DC and move all possible back to the state level.
Force Congress to telecommute most of the year.
Move IT away from DC forever.
And I bet there are many congressmen who would rather live in their home district than near DC. (Except those milking the gravy train)
Wonder how those Leafs and Volts are doin about now.
I recently heard on some talk show that Iran will attack us by taking our electric grid out, returning us to the 19th century, and probably worse, as we are no longer self-sufficient or at least too dependent upon electricity.
Volts run on gas as a backup so they’re no different in this case than the other 99.999% of vehicles.
Yup - anything with a carburetor and breaker points should be okay. Older diesels, too - but not the newer ones with electronic engine controls.
Anything with "throttle by wire" is definitely useless, good only as something from which to siphon fuel.
John Bolton = National Security Advisor
Good Lord. He did nothing during his time as UN Ambassador and now you want him to do another “do nothing” job. We have incredibly good people that can be NSA but John Bolton is not one of them.
Wonder how those Leafs and Volts are doin about now.
Doing fantastic running on good ole American Gasoline.
“Cars can survive lightning hits, theyll probably be OK in an EMP.”
Different energy levels in different frequency spectra.....so not apples-to-apples in comparison.
They made an exception for Gen Marshall. However, this was after he served as Secretary of State.
The 0.001% of the population who were dumb enough to buy them is up sh!t creek.
ha! I have a 99 e320 and the sensor went out on mine too. It spent several months of cranking but not turning over. My guy switched out the sensor ($200 :)) and it hasn’t happened since!
“Certain dirk bikes will survive EMPs. Not much else.”
Not true. EMP effects will be statistical in nature, and dependent on actual energy coupled to sensitive electronics. Everything will not be destroyed. Some things - probably, many things - possibly, everything - highly unlikely.
Bolton is a good man and we would do well to heed his advice.
Maybe a good man but did not cut the UN, did not even combine departments or anything. No he sucked as UN Ambassador. Who cares if he agreed with the wars...lots of people did. He needed to do his job as UN Ambassador which for most conservatives means gutting the place.
Why are the electronics on a Volt presumed to be more vulnerable than other electronically controlled vehicles?
I can just picture the big gasoline-powered generator, strapped to the roof of a Nissan Leaf.
Let me esssplain:
Much of DC (and other areas in VA) is without power from the recent storms (some places are not scheduled to be restored until Saturday).
The Volt runs on electricity.
There is no electricity in DC to charge the Volts.
The Volts won’t run.
See, so easy almost anyone can follow it!
Or, maybe you think that like Yosemite Sam, he should have just mined the building with TNT and ‘blowed ‘em up’?!?
In honesty I sorta hoped he did something similiar to this solution and I know it is not realistic and maybe he did do a lot but I guess I am not realistic on what he actually could cut during his tenure. I don’t know if I was being hard on Bolton but probably so.
I think you’re right, I think it was something like 80%.
IIRC people living in the south east would do better than people in the north east. The study showed the NE would basically cease to exist.
