From another story, the bear was within 30 feet of the childen and refused to be driven off. The homeowner shot the 175 lb animal with a .22, killing it. It had two ear tags from previous problems.

Killed with a .22? That’s some pretty good shot placement there.

We had a bear (about a year and a half old) walk through our back yard a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately, we were all inside.

.22 LR? .223? 22-250? 220 Swift? Maybe .22 Remington Jet? Lot's of other 22 caliber cartridges out there besides rim-fire.
Regardless, if rim-fire's all you have, It's better than a frying pan.

Stony Point Resident Shoots Black Bear During Family BarbecueFigures. Wait until the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Bears (NAACB) hears about this, not to mention the New Black Bears (NBB).
And I can't wait to see Al Sharpteeth and Jawsy Jackson bemoaning the plight of minority bears.
