Stony Point Resident Shoots Black Bear During Family Barbecue (NY)

A Stony Point resident hosting a family barbecue shot a black bear he deemed a threat to his guests when the bear would not leave his property Saturday afternoon.

The incident took place at approximately 1 p.m. at 567 Willow Grove Road, Stony Point Police Sgt. John Wood told Patch. Guests, including children, were outside when the bear came onto the property and at the time of the shooting, but police did not know how many.

"The bear came onto his property in close proximity to his guests and was not shooing away," said Sgt. Wood. "He took matters into his own hands."

The homeowner, Richard Wheeler, used a rifle to shoot the bear, which died at the scene. The Department of Environmental Conservation arrived at the home and "found everything to be fine," said Sgt. Wood. A DEC represtentative was not available for an interview at the time of publication.

The DEC released the bear to Wheeler, who declined a phone interview with Patch regarding the incident.

The Willow Grove Road home is located in a relatively low density, wooded area close to Harriman State Park.

Several bear sightings in the Hudson Valley region have been reported recently. Earlier this June, black bears were spotted in New Castle and at Armonk's Wampus Elementary and H.C. Crittenden Middle Schools. The DEC provided safety tips following those sightings.

"Any time people come in contact with a bear, call the police," advised Sgt. Wood. "Try not to go near a bear."

She had backup.
Once the bear rounded the corner into the backyard, the rest of the pack of hounds saw the bear and went absolutely nuts. Eight beagles all howling at once. It was pandemonium.

No offense, but I don’t think 8 beagles are going to intimidate a momma bear.

My neighbor has a couple ankle bitters who think they are bears. They even kick sand with their front paws. I guess when you kick sand, that makes you extra badass.

Unfortunately for da bears, they are not top on the totem pole of creation. They are overpopulated for the amount of land the illegal invaders have left for them in our country.

However, on the upside they have much more land now available in Mexico and South America.

It's better than a frying pan.

Well....

Better, yes, however, a cast iron skillet can be useful.

I don't know about you, but I would include "rabid mountain lion" in one of my worst-case scenarios.

“another note is that tracking a wounded bear of any sort through think cover is certainly not where you want to take that .22 with you that you just used to wound him/her”

Damn right. We ran a black bear and 2 cubs out of camp and they headed into a thicket right beside the tree where the bear bag was tied off. Three of us drew straws to see who it was gonna be to go untie it and re-hang it on a better limb.
