Self-preservation? Maybe he realized this was a time of unprecedented peril for the United States. Back in WWI and WWII it was from enemies foreign. Now it's from enemies domestic. When he realized that there is only a very thin chance of his having any relevance at all, no matter who wins the presidency and control of the Senate, he started to believe that he was staring his (and everyone else's) political death in the face.
