Obama's troubled Charlotte convention: If you hold it, some won't come

At the time two years ago it seemed like such a good idea for Barack Obama and his Democrat party.

Take the 2012 national party convention and plunk it down South in the gold ole boy, one-time always-red state of North Carolina. BO captured its 15 electoral votes in 2008, the first time since 1968 a Dem had pulled that off. Staging his re-coronation there would help guarantee that the ex-state senator won the Tarheel State again.

Or not. At present, Mitt Romney holds a narrow state poll lead.

Those rosy plans, like so much political strategizing so far in advance, was a waste of time and began to unravel almost immediately. Too late to change now though.

For nearly nine decades North Carolina voted Democratic until in the mid-1960's voters there decided Lyndon Johnson's Great Society wasn't so great for them. Obama didn't win it by much -- just 14,000 votes out of 4.3 million. But, hey, why not go for two?

Who would have thought, outside of those who voted against her in the first place, that Bev Perdue would be such a Democrat disaster as governor, so much so that she's not even seeking reelection? Who would have anticipated all the state party turmoil, fomented in part from nasty charges by a former male staffer that state Democratic party director Jay Parmley sexually harassed him, followed by a lawsuit.

Poor research by the usually accurate Investors Business Daily.

Nixon won North Carolina in 1968; Carter took it in 1976.

They all must have downloaded that new Microsoft app, “Avoid Obama.” It’s a spin-off of their, “Avoid Ghetto” app.

In the spirit of Elizabeth Warren becoming a member of Ancestory.Com, perhaps the Republicans buy airplane tickets for the Dems that won’t go to their convention.

...and then parade large copies of those tickets all around their districts.
