Unemployed Brooklyn man misses job interview to save 9-month-old {blown onto subway track]

An unemployed Brooklyn man missed a job interview Tuesday for the best of reasons: He was saving the life of a 9-month-old boy who was blown into the path of an oncoming subway train by a gust of high wind.

Like a superhero without a cape, Delroy Simmonds jumped onto the elevated tracks and hoisted the bleeding child — still strapped into his stroller — to the safety of the platform as the J train bore down on them.

The father of two then shrugged off his courageous, selfless act.

“Everybody is making me out to be some sort of superhero,” the father of two told the Daily News on Tuesday night. “I’m just a normal person. Anybody in that situation should have done what I did”...

A brave fellow New Yorker! Despite everything, I love these people. They are the same people who ran into the WTC when it was burning and stood on line to give blood on 9/11.

And to parents: there’s a reason there is a yellow line. Stand waaaaaaaaaay behind it and keep your hands on the baby stroller!

Did you ever think that Mr. Simmonds might remove the cap when entering the workplace? Lots of people wear Yankee & Mets caps in NYC. Sheesh!

Good on you, Mr. Simmonds!! What a awesome thing to do!

Here's hoping his prospective employer reads the story, and gives him some serious brownie points for his actions!

Did you read my entire post, miss marmelstein? Before you get too snippy, please re-read it. I EXPLICITLY excepted that behavior of wearing it in an interview and assumed he wouldn’t wear it in.

He passed my interview process for a maintenance position before he showed up.

He demonstrated he has at the core what it takes to become a valuable employee. The rest of it is up to the employer.

Nice pick up...and me too. If he was a Bronx guy and a Yankee fan, he probably would have first made sure the family were Yankee fans before doing anything.

This is true. It is good to remember that good grooming and appearance does not mean a three piece suit. Someone can wear jeans and a polo shirt, and look neat and clean.

Well, all your posts were so long I may have missed it. But you still seem really picky about a guy who jumped onto a subway track to save a baby.

I’m not fond of nose rings and tattoos myself. But there are a lot of good workers in NYC who have them.

And appropriate. I lost my chance at my first job by people telling me to wear heels, hose, gloves and a hat. I was just out of high school and trying for a clerk's job at the dime store. Duh! Somebody else also told me to negotiate for my first wage. That did not go well either! LOL. I caught on quickly after that.

If I owned a business in New York, I’d hire the guy on the spot.

Agreed!

After all these 26 years of life south of the Mason-Dixon, still can't naturally say, "fixin'ta", "y'all" or intentionally use a sentence dropping the verb "to be", as in..."The car needs fixed."

BUT, as you know, I'd rather be here in GreenAcres than any of the multiple NE cities I spent time in...(notice I did not say "did time in"...).

;>D

Reminds me of the story from a decade or two ago: a fellow was late to a job interview because he had stopped to help a lady change her tire. You guessed it: that lady was his interviewer, and yes, he got the job.

I sort of doubt he was wearing a three-piece suit (does ANYONE anymore!?) for a warehouse job, but these may not have been the clothes he was wearing for the interview - which was at 12:45 pm. It seems to be nighttime in the photo.

I was just telling my kids that while one can’t judge a book by its cover - people are ALWAYS doing that. Even if you are clean and neat but have tattoos on your face/neck, a bunch of piercings, and orange and blue hair - you will probably not be a candidate for numerous jobs. (None of which Delroy has BTW).

Yes - I imagine he won’t be long without a job.
