With 43% of precincts reporting, veteran U.S. Senator Orrin G. Hatch is the projected winner over challenger Dan Liljenquist in a primary election held in tandem with the final presidential primary in the nation.
The 2-1 margin of victory was a surprise to some observers considering that Hatch's fellow former senator Bob Bennett was defeated at the convention even before the state primary vote in 2010.

My observations: Hatch is ‘conservative’ when he’s worried about not remaining in office. He’s been drinking the D.C. water too long. We need Tea Party conservatives to replace these dead horses.
It disappoints me that Palin would endorse him.
My prediction is that Senator Hatch serves for one last term, and then, the GOP POTUS (whoever this is) ends up nominating Hatch for an opening on the SCOTUS. I’m not a fan of Senator Hatch, so I do hope that my prediction of him being picked for SCOTUS is wrong.
Hatch is 78, and will be 84 when his term ends, I don’t think he will be put on the Supreme Court.
Dan Liljenquist was a weak candidate with not as much money as Senator Hatch, and his claims to be a member of the TEA Party were, also, in question, with, as an example, his comments about having tax increases being possible solutions to some of the country’s economic problems. Still, I would of voted for Dan, despite all of these things, if I was a Utah voter, because Senator Hatch has been a U.S. Senator for way too long.

Hatch has done a lot for Conservatism over the decades.
You maybe more right than you know. Rumors are Rube Buzzy Ginsberg may or may not jump ship if she sees Da-One is going down to defeat so he can name her replacement.
Having Hatch on Judiciary to be a voice of sanity with loons like Smuckee Chumer grilling SCOTUS nominees is not a bad thing during a potential Romney Administration.
But with that said, Orin's time has come and gone and is akin to legacy data and if you and I had our druthers, he'd be gone.
This paradigm of these old bulls in the Senate serving for 30+ years and dying on the job with a State Funeral must end.
Repealing of the 17th amendment and adding Term Limits to the House and Senate to it is the way to go IMHO....
Orrin Hatch..... the original supporter, and big-time promoter, of “The Dream Act” wins by a 2 to 1 margin. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.......... guess the Hispanic vote is more prolific than we thought.
I hope the primary challenger put a scare into hatch though and he changes some of his ways.

Not happening - we control enough Senate votes so that we can filibuster until after the election
we need “tea party” conservatives, but dan was no tea party conservative - that was the problem. Just because Hatch was not a perfect candidate, does not automatically mean his opponent is better.

He won't be the one to run an insurgent primary campaign versus an incumbent Mittens in 2016; he'd have to wait until 2020, so I doubt it. He didn't like the money chase. I see book tour in this guy's future and not much else...although I wouldn't put past him maybe a Penn Gubernatorial try in 2014, IF Corbett gets picked up by Mitten's Cabinet.
Unless Mittens wanted to replace Ginsberg in 2013 with a similar short-termer on the Supreme Court -- which Hatch wants more than anything in this world, and isn't shy about it, either.
Agreed: Hatch was never as bad as McCain. I hope he goes on to be a great committee chairman in this next Senate session and others to come.
