HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A woman tried to save drivers from getting ticketed by police and instead ended up in jail herself. Now she claims she was wrongfully arrested.

It all happened as officers were clocking speeders and pulling them over last week near downtown. Natalie Plummer now fears police retribution. She says she was just trying to get people to stop driving so fast, and that instead of being seen as helpful, she was arrested for it.

Plummer admits she probably will never hold up a similar sign again out near any road.

"I was completely abiding by the law," she said. "I was simply warning citizens of a situation ahead."

Last Thursday on West Dallas, Plummer was on her bike headed home from the grocery store when she saw Houston police pulling over alleged speeders. She took some video while riding by.

She said, "I felt like he was just pulling random cars over."

So Plummer went up the street a few blocks, made an impromptu sign on a grocery bag reading 'Speed Trap!' and stood, she says, on the sidewalk.

"I for sure did not step into the street," Plummer said. "(I stayed) on the sidewalk the entire time."

After a few minutes, Plummer claims one of the officers drove up, jumped from his car and started pulling at her backpack. She says he searched it without consent, and then arrested her.

"He was telling me he was taking me to jail for obstructing justice, that was an automatic three to five years," Plummer recalled.

When I was in High School I used to do this. If I saw a radar trap I would go down the road and put up a sign that said “Radar Trap Ahead”. Either that or I’d go around and then drive down the street going about 15 miles per hour below the speed limit with a trail of cars behind me who would all change their tunes about me being a road hog when they’d see the radar cops. I’d wave at the cops as I crawled on by their trap.

The fact that they would call her actions “obstructing justice” is a joke. If she was on the sidewalk like she claims, then she was perfectly within her rights to warn motorists of a potential pick pocket ahead.

Battery and kidnapping.

The case law is clear and recent.

She owns them.

A mature (over 60) lady gets pulled over for speeding...

Older Woman: Is there a problem, Officer?

Officer: Ma’am, you were speeding

Older Woman: Oh, I see.

Officer: Can I see your license please?

Older Woman: I’d give it to you but I don’t have one.

Officer: Don’t have one?

Older Woman: Lost it 4 years ago for drunk driving.

Officer: I see...Can I see your vehicle registration papers please..

Older Woman: I can’t do that.

Officer: Why not?

Older Woman: I stole this car.

Officer: Stole it?

Older Woman: Yes, and I killed and hacked up the owner.

Officer: You what?

Older Woman: His body parts are in plastic bags in the trunk if you want to see. The Officer looks at the woman and slowly backs away to his car and calls for back up. Within minutes, five police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun.

Officer 2: Ma’am, could you step out of your vehicle please! The woman steps out of her vehicle.
Older woman: Is there a problem sir?

Officer 2: One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner.

Older Woman: Murdered the owner?

Officer 2: Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car, please. The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but empty space.

Officer 2: Is this your car, ma’am?

Older Woman: Yes, here are the registration papers. The officer is quite stunned.

Officer 2: One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving license. The woman digs into her handbag and pulls out a clutch purse and hands it to the officer. The officer examines the license. He looks quite puzzled.

Officer 2: Thank you ma’am, one of my officers told me you didn’t have a license, that you stole this car, and that you murdered and hacked up the owner.

Older Woman: I bet the liar told you I was speeding, too!

I believe a citizen is free to discuss with other citizen how tax dollars are being used. If Elsberg could publish the Pentagon Papers, surely this woman’s actions are protected under the 1st amendment.

That would be my defense

It’s all about whether you live in a home-rule state, Orange.

If you live in a home-rule state, citizens can recall police chiefs and put local council and county board members on the hot seat.

They can also set up teams to investigate leftists.

In my community, for example, we fired two police chiefs and sent five county employees and elected officials to state prison.

Patriots gotta get involved locally if they expect to take their country back.

No she was arrested by the criminals who were denying her her first amendment rights to communicate with other citizens about government activity. The cops (again) are the criminals

Too bad people just don’t obey the traffic laws. I guess that rule of law thing is best applied selectively.

I’m disgusted by the posters who blame her for this incident.
Which poster did that?

There are police jurisdictions here in our rural area where a speeder getting pulled over is a rare event. There are others that are legitmately called “traps”.

I have no problem with busting up a speed trap. It should be done more often.

I wouldn’t give some of our towns a hard time, though. If they have one of their very few policemen watching speeds, it’s because they’ve been told there’s a problem.

But not everyone lives in a rural town/village.

Other day I was rolling south on Idaho 95, right around noon. I met a convertible with a couple young ladies in it, each waving waving an arm up and down (operative word: down).

I had the fleeting and totally delusional thought that despite the speed, the bright sun in the sky and the dirty windshield of my old pickup, they somehow had grasped that I STILL HAVE IT.

Fleeting, as I say. In an instant I realized that they were waving to me to slow down, which I did, and spotted the patrolman at roadside over the next hill.

Oh well. I had the moment. And didn’t get the citation.

That was primarily a fundraising operation, enforcement being merely the rationale. She was interfering with their fundraising.

She was the lookout for the criminals, and that’s okay? Interesting.

Criminals?

Since when is doing 35 in a 30 a "Crime". She was encouraging the public to slow down and obey the law.

How can someone with the fascist attitude you have about traffic laws consider yourself a Freeper?

Cool Ziravan!!! Now just up the road in Hearne there is a nice little welcome committee. The speed trap is around a bend where the speed limit drops so fast no way can you slow down in time. Don’t ask me how I know it aggravates me every time I think about it. :(

If the goal is to reduce speeding, many areas advise you by posting signs:

In re: your ticket defense... Wow... Nice job! What was the judge’s response? Or, did the prosecutor drop the charge? A very good read - you just need to include an epilogue!

I always flash my lights at oncoming drivers to warn them of a speed trap they are headed into. If I am ever stopped questioned about it I have simple, iron-clad defense. I’m warning drivers about a potentially dangerous situation ahead. I do the same for broken down cars, accidents, etc. For oncoming cars, speed traps are no different. Often drivers, upon seeing a speed trap, hit their brakes unexpectedly on stretches of roadway where drivers following them would not anticipate braking. This can (and does) lead to rear-end collisions. Hence my warning. So, officer/judge, try to tell me I should stop warning oncoming drivers of potentially dangerous situations in their path.
