Gays in military called settled issue
Philly.com ^ | 6/22/2012

The Republican chairman of the House Armed Services Committee said Thursday that allowing gays to serve openly in the military is a settled issue that he will not try to reverse even if Mitt Romney wins the presidency in November and the GOP captures the Senate.

Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon of California said his focus is on restoring money for the military after the latest round of defense cuts - a planned reduction of $487 billion over 10 years that could nearly double if Congress fails to avert automatic, across-the-board cuts that begin in January.

Pressed on the divisive issue of gay rights that roiled Congress two years ago, McKeon said he would not revisit it.

"We fought that fight," McKeon told reporters at an hour-long breakfast interview. He said his goal is to "get the things that our war-fighters need."

The committee chairman said other GOP lawmakers might try to reinstate the "don't ask, don't tell policy" that was in effect for nearly two decades.

"That's not something that I would personally bring up," he said.

Looks like ol’ Buck has neared the end of his time in Congress. Guess it’s time for him to retire to Seal Beach perhaps.

As soon as dems get their way, they declare the issue ‘settled’.

Nothing is ever ‘settled’ until they have a total win - at which point they don’t want any discussion of the issue - ever.

Well, I'm inspired. Nothing says, "Vote for me!" like announcing that nothing will change...

Dear God, please give us an alternative!

This is one congressman from California that may or may not be around in 2013 and even if he is, may not chair the House Armed Services Committee. That aside, he admitted that although he won't revisit 'gays in the military', another congressional Representative may attempt to bring back 'don't ask, don't tell'. Whether enough Republican Representatives would get behind that is an open question right now. Only the November election results can give a clearer answer.

However, with the election looming, it's not surprising that elected Republicans don't want to get mired in this contentious issue when a (small) majority of Americans seem to favor 'gays' serving openly and many are ambivalent about it, making the issue one that the GOP doesn't want to pursue. Unfortunately, although I believe Mitt Romney will defeat Obama, I doubt he'll be eager to dump the Obama policy that allows 'gays' to serve 'openly' in the U.S. military, so I think we're stuck with it, for awhile (until enlistments crater and sex scandals erupt).

It IS a settled issue. How can it be reversed? No C-in-C will ever be willing to “offend” the fags and hags by tossing them out of the military. The “pandora’s box” has been opened...

So is this another example of Romney hiding behind “it’s settled law” and staying liberal to boot.

BS. Nothing is settled unless a righteous people refuses to stand up. He can be voted out like the rest of the RINOS that got us here.

The GOPe knew that this issue was embraced by both parties, and that it would be settled in 2012 no matter who won, or 2008 if they could have gotten Romney into office back then.

This is Mitt Romney in 1994.

QUOTE: “If we are to achieve the goals we share, we must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern. My opponent cannot do this. I can and will.

We have discussed a number of important issues such as the Federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which I have agreed to co-sponsor, and if possible broaden to include housing and credit, and the bill to create a federal panel to find ways to reduce gay and lesbian youth suicide, which I also support. **One issue I want to clarify concerns President Clinton’s “don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t pursue” military policy. I believe that the Clinton compromise was a step in the right direction. I am also convinced that it is the first of a number of steps that will ultimately lead to gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and honestly in our nation’s military. That goal will only be reached when preventing discrimination against gays and lesbians is a mainstream concern, which is a goal we share.

As we begin the final phase of this campaign, I need your support more than ever. By working together, we will achieve the goals we share for Massachusetts and our Nation.
Sincerely,
W. Mitt Romney

See post 13, no matter who wins in 2012, he will have wanted this.

The only difference is that Romney has wanted it for many, many years longer.

Well, since there are no such Freepers, your post is rather worthless.

However, I will point out that ABO's are actually POPs (Party over Principle).

It’s a settled issue that conservative officers, the heart and soul of the military, will have a lot less enthusiasm for serving.

Sad, just sad, how amoral and degraded our society has become.

However, I will point out that ABO's are actually POPs (Party over Principle).

I prefer to consider it "SURVIVAL" over "SUBMISSION," (and in that to which our Community Agitator supports, Islam) but hey, you Hate-Romney-Mormons feel welcomed to stick to your "Principles" as our Dear Leader continues on his Stealth Jihad march toward facilitating the replacing of our Constitution with Sharia and working diligently toward our Destruction.

As I have pointed out repeatedly, you know your antagonist in an argument has lost the war when they respond with the false Hate card.

Logic, principle, and facts are lacking in that approach and all that is left is name-calling.
