And it was puritanical compared with what appears to have been the outright theft of the 1960 election for Kennedy over Nixon by Chicago’s Mayor Daley and Lyndon Johnson."

Watergate in two words—John Dean.

The president’s counsel, John Dean, a slippery weasel who was up to his eyebrows in unauthorized illegal practices, made a plea-bargain deal and then gave perjured evidence against his own client, which would have been completely inadmissible in a law court. The House Judiciary Committee was a mockery. Its counsel, John Doar, a foaming-at-the-mouth partisan on all fours with Bradlee-Woodstein, produced five counts of impeachment, of which four were farcical on a Kafkaesque scale: Articles 2 to 5 of the impeachment alleged that Nixon “endeavored” to misuse the IRS (not that he had actually done so) and had violated his oath of office and the rights of other citizens. (By this last criterion, historically guilty parties would have been numerous and distinguished, including FDR, the Kennedys, and LBJ.)”

Anyone who has listened to the tapes of Nixon’s instructions to his aides knows that Nixon was a profoundly amoral and criminal man. He was not a good President, he co-opted the Left constantly as he had no conservative or moral scruples.
Pointing to the wickedness of Democrats does not change this. Charles Colson publicly repented of his Nixonian amorality, Nixon himself never did so.
If it is any consolation, by the time the fiftieth anniversary of Watergate comes around, the paper that became famous for breaking the story will probably be out of business

In 1969, Nixon authorized the “Philadelphia Plan” one of the first Affirmative Action efforts. Affirmative Action programs have resulted in our present incompetent and criminal administration at the executive level.
In 1970 Nixon established the EPA. The EPA now threatens to close coal fired electrical plants nationwide.
In 1971 Nixon abrogated the Bretton Woods agreement. That led to a decade of economic stagnation combined with historic inflation.
In 1972 Nixon opened up China. China now is on a path to replace US as the largest world economy.

IMO, RMN was a choirboy compared to others who came after; others who would leave a trail of slime in the White House and lower the bar of public trust.
Nixon also was a star in the Hiss/Chambers case. The Communists hated him for it. That alone deserves our respect.

Had the will (in spades) to bomb Hanoi to the extent that it led to the release of POW’s of that war shortly thereafter.
I wasn’t born yet when Watergate occurred. However, I do remember being taught about it in History class in middle school. My immediate reaction to being told the details of what occurred was “And? So? He had to resign because of that?”.
You should have been there last weekend, during the celebration of the centennial of his birthplace. His sister-in-law Clara Jane Nixon was in attendance.
The library is also celebrating the Pat Nixon centennial--she was born in Ely, Nev. in March, 1912.

To single him out as "profoundly amoral and criminal" is grotesque and totally misunderstands the reality of the political stage--Nixon never did anything that his predecessors hadn't done numerous times before--but got away with. Be honest--hang one, hang them all.
Compared to Kennedy, who is now openly acknowledged to have rigged the 1960 election; Carter, who attempted to enlist the aid of the Soviet Union KGB in tampering with the 1980 election; Clinton, who pretty clearly had political enemies killed; and Obama, who has committed treason by any reasonable definition, Nixon was a peach.
