Why did NBC not air the most damning part of Jerry Sandusky-Bob Costas interview?
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | 6/18/2012 | Joe Cowley

....Then came the sound bite NBC should have aired on every television set around the country as soon it was muttered from Sandusky’s mouth.

“Well — you might think that,’’ Sandusky said. “I don’t know. In terms of — my relationship with so many, many young people. I would — I would guess that there are many young people who would come forward. Many more young people who would come forward and say that my methods and — and what I had done for them made a very positive impact on their life. And I didn’t go around seeking out every young person for sexual needs that I’ve helped. There are many that I didn’t have — I hardly had any contact with who I have helped in many, many ways.’’

Instead, they sat on it.

An NBC news executive emailed me the explanation as, “There were a lot of compelling comments in the original interview, but we did not have time to include them all.’’

What’s truly sad in all of this is NBC’s ignorance is just a small sidebar in a story and trial that continues to tear at the heart of every parent out there.

The prosecution rested its case this week by calling the mother of Victim 9 to the stand, after the now-18-year-old had already detailed that Sandusky had made him bleed by anally raping him. The mother told the jury that she always wondered why her son’s underwear were always missing from the laundry.

The defense then waltzed out its first two witnesses, former Penn State assistant coaches Dick Anderson and Booker Brooks. Their testimony? They, too, had showered with young boys while at Penn State, as if it was regular behavior.

So I'm supposed to believe that the execs as NBC didn't know that Sandusky essentially confessed during the Costas interview?

The corruption is not confined to Penn State.

That was the same question I had when I read the transcript of the Costas interview this morning.

I can't imagine a context where those comments are not completely damning.

Maybe they shortened the tape because Bob Costas is so damn hard to watch and listen to.

Well, my bet is on the possibility that the Big Three Networks, virtually all media not identified as conservative or “fair and balanced” are on the side of the perverts....it’s simple if you think about it.

Probably one of the conditions for the interview was that Sandusky’s lawyer had the right to edit it. Which is sleazy, but in a different way.

“The corruption is not confined to Penn State.”

No, I’m sure it is not. What happened at Penn State was that the administration put football ahead of the safety of little boys and I’ve no doubt that no end of atrocities take place that get covered up because of football or some other sport.

IF Sandusky had gone after little girls instead of boys, you can believe that the media would already be stringing up the rope to a tree and convicting him and advocating the maximum punishment possible under the law.

As the facts demonstrate, Sandusky had a thing for little boys, and the media is reluctant to do it's job because to do so would put the spotlight on homosexual behavior for all the world to see, and they are terrified of offending all the homosexuals who have entrenched themselves in our society.

Mr. Costas never smiles.

Watching him is like running fingernails down a blackboard.

100% correct - my bet is homos are the majority in a lot of news and broadcasting, plus advertising. Nice tag line.

Surely you jest. Tom BrokeJaw?
The guy who spent decades in the news business, but was surprised to discover all that the WWII generation accomplished when he wrote his book about them?
I think you'd have to go back to the Huntley-Brinkley era (if not John Cameron Swayze) for a smattering of honesty.

Did they sodomize young boys in the shower too, or was that not regular behavior for anyone but Sandusky?

Apparently, Sandusky’s idiot lawyer thinks that showing that all the coaches at PSU thought showering with boys was just fine and dandy is going to win his client some points.

If I was on that jury, I'd be appalled and pretty convinced that the whole place was a cesspool of corruption and pedophilia.

Costas is a major reason the bird man clip from this weekend is so funny. Little sense of humor or the absurd - he's got a frankburnsness about him that cracks me up.

In fairness to Sandusky’s idiot lawyer, he has to work with what he’s got.

Sandusky is going to be convicted and sent to prison for the rest of his life. There is nothing Sandusky’s lawyer can do to help his case.

I expect the jury to deliberate for several minutes, spending most of the time picking a foreman.
