Graves of British soldiers of the Royal Horse Artillery at the Commonwealth Benghazi War Cemetery

Commonwealth War Cemetery in Benghazi targeted again Headstone damaged, markers removed Digger graves among 198 damaged in February

THERE has been another war graves attack at a cemetery in Libya which contains the remains of Australian soldiers.

Authorities say a headstone has been damaged and temporary markers removed from some graves at the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Benghazi.

"The nationality of the individual buried beneath the headstone that was damaged is not yet known,'' the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) said today.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is working to identify the individual and to restore any damage. It will also replace the removed grave markers as soon as possible.

The department said it was in the process of determining if Australian war graves were affected.

If any were, they would be "respectfully restored and maintained".

Australian graves were among 198 damaged at Benghazi cemetery in February.

At the time, Prime Minister Julia Gillard said she was disgusted by the attack and wanted the perpetrators punished.

More than 1200 Commonwealth troops who died in the north African desert battles of World War II are buried in the cemetery, in Libya's east.

There are 55 Australian graves among them, 48 of which are identified and seven unidentified.

The only thing damaged are the brains of those who thought christian gravestones in a muslim country would remain unmolested.

With all the money thrown away, why can’t Christian countries exhume their war dead from muzzie lands and bring them home? Send a few battalions, lay waste to all around and bring them home.

That’s common sense. When Israel dismantled Jewish homes in the Sinai, and more recently in Gaza, cemetaries were evacuated as well. Desecration being a given. An amazing culture, can’t even leave infidel dead alone. I acknowledge desecrating infidel graves is safer than confronting living infidels.

We;ve spent a bunch bring them home from Vietnam, as well we should. All leaving them in muzzie lands does id give them a new way to ‘get back’ at the infidel and torment the families further...Oh and extract State Dept $$$ to pay them not to...which they will take, then desecrate anyway.

There is not a single thing about that culture (if you can call it a culture) that has a single redeeming value. The more I learn, the more disgust I have. While I haven’t read up as much as some, I’d say I have more than most and their entire history is a blot on the planet.

I’ll never get how any westerner can make excuses for them.

Some people have no respect for anything other than the power of a boot on their neck.

No administrators there? It should be relatively easy to track some of these roaches from their faces, and thus get the others. And what’s with all the weapons? Open carry in Australia?

The cemetery in question is in Libya, not Australia. It is just filled with the graves of Britons, Australians, and Canadians killed during World War II.
