The following 8th-grade exit exam materials for Washington state in 1910....
(Excerpt) Read more at eagleforum.org ...
And the answer for 2012 is?
“What causes the difference in climate between Eastern and Western Washington? “
WHAT???? you mean geography plays a role in climet???? Heaven forfend
That’s racist and possibly sexist!
/sarcasm
I noticed that there were no questions regarding LGBTQ history or how to put on a condom.
Many 8th graders now couldn’t even interpret the questions, much less answer them.
‘A gardener sells his celery for 8 1/3 cents per bunch. How many bunches should he give for $5.00?’
LOL, thats when money was worth something!
Nice test but how could it possibly apply today? First, it requires work which is anathema. Second it might result in failure and we couldnt have that! Third there’s not enough time left over from doing the self esteem lessons. We’re ALL winners you know.... LOL, they really were the good ole days....well at least not so politically correct.
What’s a Puritns?
I have a 1979 WA history text book (for public screwel children). Among the over-emphasized minorities are Jews. How things have changed.
Proud European-American Honky Cracka! /sarc
People seem to think education and intelligence are synonymous. An eight grade student back then is about equivalent to a first year college student today . Maybe. Could be even higher too. Look at what passes for a college grad today. They might just be able to parse a verb or even balance their checkbook although I doubt it.
These are just as much gimme questions as anything today. Especially that one. The answer is: Duh! Big ol' mountain range in the middle.

Wow. I think I could pass it but not easily (especially if there was a short time limit).
Most Americans were not expected to progress beyond eighth grade and they often graduated from eight grade at an older age than the age of 13 common today.
The notion of high school as being a standard level of education for all adults dates to the 1930s-1940s.
“What causes the difference in climate between Eastern and Western Washington?”
All the Speechifying from the politicians.
It’s clear that the WA schools were much more demanding in 1910, but how was the self esteem of the students? It was clearly possible that this test could pose a substantial threat to the self esteem of any student who wasn’t applying himself in school.
Prior to about 1910, 8th grade was often the highest grade attended by boys of working class families. In my family, in rural PA, the girls went on to finish high school and normal school. the boys went to work.

General Question 6. If you succeed in obtaining an eighth grade diploma, do you expect to attend school next term? Where?
**********************************************************
Answer: University of Washington
I suspect that only a minority of high school seniors today could pass such an exam. Expectations sure have plummeted.
Orthography #7 need to add (for the benefit of MANY Freepers) lose, loose ;^)
I got 100% on the spelling part!
In 2010, Barack Obama called for fixing the public education system by giving us the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and Race to the Top, which he said would fix the education system already fixed by the 2001 GW Bush and Ted Kennedy legislation called No Child Left Behind, which was supposed to fix a system supposedly already fixed by a 1994 piece of federal legislation called Goals 2000, which was supposed to fix a system already fixed by America 2000, which was a 1991 response during the Bush administration to a 1983 federal report on education called A Nation at Risk, which was published a full four years after Jimmy Carter first fixed the nations public school system by establishing a cabinet-level Department of Education in 1979.
Haven’t all these been thoroughly debunked already? Pretty sure.
Sure, they know the important stuff - but can they log into FaceBook?

No, silly.....meeses
I still had to know much of the same body of knowledge in 1951.
And I did. I passed a similar battery of tests for eighth grade promotion with not merely passing scores, or good scores, but with an “A+” in each category - one of four students in the entire county to achieve that level.
Got branded as the “smart kid” all through high school.
Not an easy crown to wear.
“Cutie pi”? Cripes.
I stand corrected.
I'm hoping he meant "Puritans". Must be the invisible 'a' that is distantly related to the silent 'e'.

Many much moosen!!!!!
I would be interested in seeing, how many journalists today, could pass that Grammar Test.
I doubt that many college educated today could answer all those questions........................
I took the GMAT a few weeks back ... that was harder than the GMAT.
Today the ‘education system’ is geared toward producing functional illiterates capable of barely supporting themselves at menial labor, of which there is little available.
Reminds me of the Epsilon Double Minus Caste in “Brave New World”.......................
Here it is for 2012:
1. Name three of the hundreds of ways George W. Bush personally destroyed the American economy in 2008.
2. Describe how this country’s Pledge of Allegiance discriminates against free-thinking people who correctly believe humankind is, always was and always will be the highest form of life.
3. What is the preamble to the United Nations charter?
4. Describe one of the many reasons a sharing, communal, sustainable lifestyle is vastly superior to the selfishness of earth-destroying suburban settings.
5. When you have your first gay experience, will you first: 1) Announce it on Facebook, 2) Gleefully inform your adult life-partner parental figures, or 3) Organize a Pride parade?
6. Are you forced to attend an intolerant, hateful, racist Christian church, and if so, what are the names and home addresses of anyone speaking out against diverse lifestyles?
and you would get partial credit for that answer. You also have the fact that Eastern WA is a desert plateau with a significantly higher average elevation than Western WA, and specifically from a climate standpoint, Western WA gets marine effect, where Eastern WA gets hit by winds from central Alberta at some points of the year, and eastern Oregon at other times of the year.
Being superseded by the college education for standard adults being the presumption today. As Dennis Prager has said sadly, many if not most of today’s colleges makes individuals stupider instead of smarter.
“I doubt that many college educated today could answer all those questions........................”
It took me a couple of minutes to figure out the fifth “great nation” of Europe....
Remember, in 1910 the nations that existed on the European continent are not the same as today.....................

Europe 1910
Yeah...but I bet they didn’t know that Sally had two daddies or how to put on a condom.
Yes, Austria Hungary was the tricky one. I kept thinking...Spain? No. Italy? No.....
‘...The notion of high school as being a standard level of education for all adults dates to the 1930s-1940s....”
And it’s a standard that libs work constantly to make sure will never be met.
But of course... I was just suggesting that if climate is influenced by geographic input perhaps the AGW folks need to reevaluate.... I didn’t really need a sarcasm tag did I?
I noticed that there were no questions regarding how the muzzies contributed to the founding of America.
I dunno. Sounds lika an urban ledgend to me.
As soon as I hear Neal Bootz talk about it on his show, I’ll know it’s a scam.
I learned in 5th grade in my rural Michigan schoolhouse that Presidents never bow to Kings.
The WA State Superintendent of Schools, Randy Dorn, is a former organizer for the SEIU and headed up a new branch of the SEIU for WA State. He won election by getting the Indian tribes to run the attack ads on the past Superintendent of Schools.
What type of priorities would you expect from a former SEIU organizer? He’s running for re-election this year, too.
You must be from the 3.14 family of cuties.
