Harry Reid: Maybe we can use that disputed Manny Pacquiao fight to get a federal boxing bill passed

Via Mediaite, it’s big news when the U.S. Senate majority leader says he thinks a major fight was fixed and that Congress should spring into action to solve the problem. Or at least, it would be: As you’ll see, he’s actually not saying that he thinks it was fixed. On the contrary, he thinks the outcome was the result of poor judging, not fraud. In which case … why the hell is he using this as an excuse to promote some sort of new federal boxing statute? It’s Rahm Emanuel’s infamous line about not letting a crisis go to waste, but without any actual crisis. Essentially he’s arguing that the perception of a crisis is enough of a pretext to justify a federal power grab. How’s that to make you feel warm and fuzzy about big government this evening? For three years he’s refused to pass a budget, but show him a boxing scorecard that’s in dispute and suddenly he’s ready to haul ass. This, I guess, is the “future” that Carville’s firm has in mind.

Doesn’t Nevada already have regulatory bodies to deal with this, incidentally? The state AG is also reportedly weighing a request to investigate the fight. Makes me wonder if Reid is serious about a federal boxing law or if he was just yammering because someone happened to ask him a question about his good pal Manny.

For those who don't know... Manny Pacquiao (The Filipino boxing champ who many consider the world's best pound for pound fighter ) lost his most recent match last Saturday to challenger Timothy Bradley by a close split decision in what people thought was a no-brainer unanimous win for Pacquaio (most thought he won at least 10 of the 12 of the rounds).

Pacquaio's 15 match winning streak ended.

This shocked the boxing world so much that fans are calling for an investigation on alleged payola...

No brainer, non waste of a good 15 second news blurb to push yet another Federal agency staffed with Federal employees, organized by Federal unions, paid for by Federal tax dollars...

Wow, boxing is corrupt - What news!

leave it to a SFB coward to impose his stupid a$$ warped sense of entitlement to lord over yet another industry....

Since he can make a leap with his power grabs, I will make a leap as well....

Why anyone would vote for Romney a globalist, lame excuse for a businessman (see the shape of Massachusetts) and like Reid an allegiance to something other than the Constitution, well, no thanks to them all.

I think Reid should sic the government on the TV show Master Chef. Something fishy about the judges picking the wife instead of her husband to continue on the program. /s/

I think the boxing industry should appoint a committee to investigate and recommend action concerning corruption in asshat Reid’s senate.

Bradley didn’t win the fight...the Lavender Mafia did.

One of the judges in the controversy answered it well. He said that if it were an episode of American Idol then Manny would have won handily but as a judge he awarded it to the fighter who did a better job over 12 rounds. The ones crying the loudest have a vested interest in Pacquiao's remaining undefeated since a loss has pretty much ruined the "fight of the century" against Mayweather (who I believe would toy with Manny like he was one of his sparring partners, just like he did against Marquez) and cost them a ton of money.

At the very least now fans can see how the millions of people who felt Juan Manuel Marquez got robbed in his last fight against Pacquiao (and didn't whine for an investigation) felt.

“Bradley didn’t win the fight...the Lavender Mafia did.”

Indeed, and I wonder how much money Reid had on the fight.

So, if as you say, Mayweather would easily defeat Pacquaio, why the delays and playing hard to get?

He was offered a huge chunk of money for the fight plus nearly 50% of the pay per view take and STILL he refused the deal.

What’s he aiming for anyway?

Every time I see nonsense like this it only re-enforces the fact that the Founders were correct in having Senators appointed by the states rather than direct elections.

This is just one more area where the federal government has no business getting involved. Maybe if our Senators would actually do their jobs of acting in the interest of their State rather than in the interest of the Federal government we would all be better off.

Hey, Reid

How about passing a budget?

Then you can go after boxing.

Like about 90% of everything they do, the federal government has no business overseeing boxing.

So, if as you say, Mayweather would easily defeat Pacquaio, why the delays and playing hard to get?

Did you see how much money Mayweather made fighting Miguel Cotto? He doesn't need Pacquiao to get the huge payday (2x+ what Pacquiao got fighting Bradley) the way Pacquiao needs Mayweather. That gives him leverage.

He was offered a huge chunk of money for the fight plus nearly 50% of the pay per view take and STILL he refused the deal.

He wanted 60/40 and he was under a time restriction because he had to fight by May 5th in order to stay out of jail. It just couldn't come off in time.

Don't be surprised if you see a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight Nov. 10 instead of the rematch with Bradley. Arum will be anxious to make a deal now that his flagship has started to sink. In all of the crying over spilt milk people forget that Pacquiao could easily have lots to Marquez, he didn't do well in the fight before Marquez and he never did enough to an injured and less mobile Bradley (no knockdowns, no big rounds, never really had him in any kind of trouble besides landing a couple of good single blows with no followups) to make a decision indisputable. The commentators were even questioning his heart before the fight began. That makes the SHOCK over his loss even more laughable.

We don't need corrupt politicians investigating corruption in the sport of boxing. The Bradly/Pacquaio fight should be investigated by law enforcement like any other crime. That's what usually happens when people are swindled out of millions of dollars by corrupt individuals.
