Four years ago Barack Obamas presidential campaign set an impressive new standard for using social media and technology to harness votes.
But this time round Obamas campaign have raised the bar even higher and, according to experts, this advantage could make all the difference to securing a second term in office.
According to a report by Politico today, Obamas campaign know what you read and where you shop, what kind of work you do and who you count as friends. They also know who your mother voted for in the last election.
Carried out by 150 techies this extensive data mining could give Obama the crucial edge, in what is believed to be a tight race to the White House this November.
Through Facebook, Twitter and other online sources, the campaign is working tirelessly to create a formidable data base collecting specific profiles of potential voters.
Depending on factors, such as age, interests and socio-economic levels, the campaign is able to tailor messages to these potential voters.
'They are way ahead of Romney micro-targeting and its a level of precision we havent seen before,' Darrell M. West, a leading scholar on technology innovation at the Brookings Institution, told Politico.
Unsurprisingly, the Obama campaign believes the effort and money being poured into gaining a technological advantage will pay off....

All the data-mining in the world cannot guarantee who someone selects in a voting booth.
If he were an unknown or a candidate with a decent track record, yes. But his negatives are such that all this info is useless in overcoming his core failures.
He would literally have to ‘custom threaten’ exposure of this personal info for every person there’s data on. Otherwise, a pile of info on your shopping habits at Target aren’t going to help overcome the reality of the O admin.
It shows the extent to which he’ll go to know who his friends and enemies are. Combined with the abuse of power he’s shown its not a good thing.
Brack and Facebook. Unfriend him in November.
They can data mine me until their computer freezes and they won’t find a way that would make me vote for Zero.
It is a complete waste of time, but don't tell ZERO.
I once was a techie, but me brain started hurting trying to keep up.
“I’m not a techie at all. Is this important?”
It just boils down to targeted marketing. Poor products will need a good pitch. It also indicates the Democrats do not have the blank checks to write as they did last time. The may even end up trailing the “Massachusetts moderate”* GOP.
*A great example of marketing a poor product right there.
Mike
None of this will help him. He’s toast —
I agree; he’ll end up with data that will identify with 99.9% accuracy why people detest him.
Obama's data mining team, we call it peck'en shit with the chickens, looking for a piece of corn.
Hi Im barak Obama and I am the reason why you are still living at home after you graduated college and there are no jobs avaialble to you, but dont worry I have plenty of food stamps on hand as well as a 99 week unemployment program for those who were lucky enough to have had a job but lost it and oh yeah dont forget SSI, disability, welfare and all the other fine dependent programs I have in place for you. So remember to vote for me. Remember hope and change is coming your way.
I have yet to get an email or snail mail from the Obomba campaign. I guess they’ve already given up on me as a voter.
As a future detainee, however, I’m sure that I’m already on THAT list.
At some point it gets to saturation. Much of what`s out there on YouTube is prefaced by an Obama commercial. Users want the video they`re seeking, not yet another 60 seconds of 0bama.
So, they canspend all the $$$ they want on this, but it`ll come to very little.
Personal privacy??? HA! Is that a joke? Are you really under the impression that personal privacy exists anymore?
You want personal privacy? Never use a credit card, never use a computer, never get a social security card, or a drivers license. Then maybe, MAYBE you’ll have a modicum of personal privacy.
Given the level of harassment that financial supporters of California's anti-gay-marriage proposition were subjected to, this produces a bit of foreboding in me. Visualize mailings to Dem contributors telling them which of their neighbors, co-workers, or employees are "radical right-wing extremists"
Then again, any national campaign of harassment against conservative supporters would likely have intense blow-back, even if not directly tied to the Dems.
Of course they know that my mother voted for Obama. Everybody in the cemetary did!!
In short, the incompetent moron in the oval office has to go because - given more time...he could ruin this great country of ours - forever.
Of course they know that my mother voted for Obama. Everybody in the cemetary did!!
Not being a Facebook or Twitter twit, all I can say is "Thanks goodness" I never got involved with with them, for just seeing that a$$ on my tv is bad enough!
My biggest problem is they can generate targeted lists to hand out to the thuggish leftists. Is the left creating their own McCarthy list...techno-style?
I thought I just read that Romney had outraised Zero for individual campaign contributions in May. Which is unusual for a Republican.
My wife received a mailer from the Obama campaign. Since AFAIK she's never voted for a 'rat, that's about as far off target as they can get, unless they're soliciting money from Romney.
So far their efforts seem unimpressive. How did the Wisconsin cyberwars work out last week?
Note to Google analytics, zedo, cdn: I am more interested in ads for Macy's upcoming furniture sale than fake polls, banner ads, and pictures of Moochelle or Barack.

Im not a techie at all. Is this important?
Think of it this way... If this were a company seeking out potential customers who love subs and sandwiches, data mining would provide a means for identifying and segmenting out those individuals from the general population for targeted marketing efforts. It is a great way to reduce your marketing and advertising costs, but it in no way guarantees that the prospective customers will be interested in or act on your offer. This is especially true in this case, where the data mining efforts are all designed to sell a “turd sandwich” (Barack Hussein Obama).
This is nothing more than socialist MSM propoganda attempting to pump up the “turd” and dispirit those who will vote against him in November. It is irrelevant.
And last month, behind Romney in fundraising, so how'a that micro stuff working out for 'ya Obummer? You can micro til the cows come home (or in your case, the chickens come home to roost) & it won't get people in the voting booth. Even the 'Obama Girl' isn't voting for you this time around.
Obama doesn't have the same effect on voters that he had coming out of 8 yrs with W as President.
Too many know what he is capable of and will think twice before getting sucked in by the hype this time.
Although some are beyond hope and would vote for him if he were serving a Life sentence in a federal prison. (That's a dream I have sometimes of what is in Obama's future)
If he can’t fix the economy (and he can’t), all of this data mining is worthless.
In marketing it really has a lot to do with the product.
A regular story in marketing is about a dog food company who spent tons of money trying to sell a new line. The upper management threatened and yelled and the team tried everything (just like obummer)..until one day the janitor comes in to the room and tells them - the dogs just don’t like the dog food and your not going to change that.
All your icons are belong to Barack.
Well, too late guys. Hard to market your polished turd when people can smell it every time they leave their homes, if they still have one. Yeah, put some lipstick on it this time, that will do it.
ROFLOL. I am going to "borrow" that, if you don't mind. Good one!
What that accomplishes is PO’s You Tube users who then don’t vote for him because he spent months making their online fun a kind of hell. Seriously. The average non political buff will change their vote, if they vote at all for a lot less.
>> I agree; hell end up with data that will identify with 99.9% accuracy why people detest him.
heh... good one
Data mining the Independent voter is the key.
His real problem with that is he’s getting called out now on the fact that all he does is political. If he has to send out a dozen different ‘messages’ at some point his hypocrisy will show out in the conflicting nature of his pitches.
Dave Methews Baand sold out in the Albany NY area, drawing 25,000 each night, Saturday and Sunday.
Also had a Register to Vote Promotion.
Is that a “mining the vote” operation?
Look for Romney to still beat Obama, Obama forgets that it is still “the economy stupid!”
All the more delicious if he can see how screwed he is.
So they will tailor their campaign to appeal to a bunch of brainless kids under 30, a group that already votes overwhelmingly liberal.
Pure genius, that!
If Fox network TV were to run a Star Trek movie marathon on election day none of the idiots would make it to the polls.
“In short, the incompetent moron in the oval office has to go because”
Obama is not incompetent. He knows exactly what direction he wants to steer this nation and that makes him all the more dangerous. The man is the biggest threat to the republic since the Civil War.
I am happy everytime I see Obama buy commercial time or perform data mining.
It lessens the credibility of the "Obama is planning to cancel the election" theory.
He can make all the targeted appeals he wants but when the mass of voters know you and your promises can’t be trusted such promises are not very effective.
Garbage in, garbage out.
Flood their trusted social networks with false data.
Create a false facebook account on how much you love Obama, will give away your lifes fortune, home and first born to him.
Flood the network with gobblygook.
Regardless what experts say quantity has its own quality when done large enough, a grassroots plan of action to figuratively urinate in their swimming pool will make it foul smelling and unusable.
Every day a small function like sending an email to yourself congratulating Obama will take away a resource from them when they then try to track it and to send you progressive suggestions and spam.
Sometimes you have to get down and dirty to clean up the overflowing cesspool. Turn their game against them, use their rules to befuddle them.
Four years ago it mattered because he was an unknown quantity with no paper trail who could be packaged as a rock start.
He is no longer an unknown quantity. We know he's not a rock star.
Just like Santa Claus! Oh, joy!/s
Just did a quick check and Barack Obama has 29 million "likes" on Facebook and about 16 million followers on Twitter. By comparison, Mitt Romney has about 2 million likes and only a fraction of the Twitter followers that Obama has.
Now it's easy to sit here and scoff at that and say "so what?" But consider that whenever Obama sends out a Twit, it's landing on almost 20 million cellphones across America. If, on election day, he can get 10% of those followers to go to the polls (when they otherwise would have forgotten about it), that's two million extra votes right there. That could make a huge difference.
Now granted, Obama doesn't have anywhere near the enthusiasm he had four years ago. But we must not be complacent.
In a way, Free Republic itself is part of social media. But remember that our numbers only reflect a small fraction of the conservatives and independents that are out there. The Tea Party movement needs to get a little savvier with respect to social media.
“All the data-mining in the world cannot guarantee who someone selects in a voting booth.”
No. But you can taregt ads to these people. Even ads that are subliminal in nature.
