Washington (CNN) -- More than three years after leaving office, former President George W. Bush remains unpopular with the public, according to a new national poll.
A CNN/ORC International poll also indicates that two-thirds of Americans have a positive view of Bush's predecessor, former President Bill Clinton.
According to the poll, released Thursday morning, 43% of people questioned had a favorable opinion of Bush, with 54% saying they had an unfavorable view of the former president. Bush's 43% favorable rating is the same as it was in 2010 in CNN polling, but is up from his mid-30's favorable rating during 2009, his first year out of the White House.
"Don't be surprised if the Obama campaign mentions the name of George W. Bush at every opportunity, and don't be surprised if that strategy works," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "And the mention of Bush's name appears to prompt at least a few people to take a more positive view of their current financial situation."
When asked in the survey whether they are better or worse off than they were four years ago, Americans are split, 44% to 43%. But when asked whether they are better or worse off than they were four years ago "when Bush was president," a small gap opens - 47% say they are better off compared to 41% who say they are worse off.

The mainstream media fomented hatred for President Bush while he was in office, and it continues to this day.

The lesson from the Bush Presidency is that a President must manage his image, and not let the media do it for him.
Reagan was every bit as vilified by the Left as Bush was, but Reagan was a master at projecting an image, in such a manner that the harsh portrayals of him by his critics didn’t stick. Bush never understood how to counter that.
The media is still playing the “all this mess Obama is trying so hard to fix was caused by Bush” card, so, they gotta drag Bush’s image through the mud; it’s a good deflection tactic. I predict the “It’s Bush’s fault” stories/polls/excuses will continue from now until the election.

He spent other peoples money like a drunk
He expanded the welfare state
He grew Government
He abandoned the free market
His mismanagement of the Iraq and Afghan war cost American lives.
He paved the way for Obama
Guess that makes him a great president in some peoples mind..
After all the Bush bashing for the past 4 years from the media and Obama administration, I’m not surprised at this news. The truth never changes, but lies are all over the place. Bush will be vindicated, and ways Carter only dreamed of.
Pure media brainwashing. Fist, when 'Bush' is entered into the question an immediate knee-jerk shift occurs among a few percentage of those polled. This is why Obama continues to blame his predecessor in hopes of fooling these dolts.
Secondly, in terms of the the first polling result, there is hardly a person in America better off now than 4 years ago right now. Probably a few hundred people out of 300 million. Every single measurement shows we are worse off. Our income is down, our cost of living is up, joblessness is much higher, underemployment is much higher, the stock market is lower, our houses are worth much less. There are hundreds of thousands of fewer millionaires, massie increases in food stamps and government assistance in the middle to lower economic ranges, and virtually everyone in between is at best holding on to where they were. Only those few people who founded Facebook or hit a windfall are doing better and moving up the ladder instead of down it. It is sad we have such a gullible population that more than the 20% hard core marxists would answer that things are better. It is a real tragedy.
Hey, I never said he was perfect, but he’s a darn sight better than the disaster of a president we have now.

Yes, I’m glad he’s gone too. But this complete maroon now is the worst ever. I wonder if CNN will report on his ratings after he’s out next year.

I don’t quite know how I’d react to a pollster posing this question to me. Really wouldn’t want to give the satisfaction to some lib pollster of a negative view of Bush. But in reality, Bush lost me totally when he started pushing amnesty. I defended him all the time up to that point on a wide variety of issues (despite my unease with his big-spending ways). But after the amnesty push, I never uttered a single word in his defense on anything ever again. Still very sour on him because of all that, and I suppose it would ultimately affect my response to a pollster.
Right, this was a national "exit" poll taken of university students nationwide as they exited their Marxism-Leninism classes -- on May Day -- provided the pollsters spied a copy of The Workers' Daily tucked under their smelly armpits? Oh.
Depends on who conducts the poll. All polls conducted by CNN will always show that Democrats are favored because only Democrats agree to participate in CNN surveys.
That will change as soon as this groupe of media damaged knuckleheads grow up.Then I think we’ll find that G.W.Bush was Correct all along and his popularity will improve substantially.
He and Rove have only themselves to blame. They allowed the LSM to control public opinion by not fighting back....ever.
Maybe they thought they were above it all, but by letting the loony leftards dominate all arguments, they not only damaged his presidency, they most certainly (as put forth by another poster), "paved the way for Obama."
