The New York Police Department, the mayor and the citys top prosecutors on Monday endorsed a proposal to decriminalize the open possession of small amounts of marijuana, giving an unexpected lift to an effort by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to cut down on the number of people arrested as a result of police stops.

So you can get as high as Harlem, but when you get the munchies afterwards, better not indulge lest Bloomberg has you arrested.
Bloomberg wants to free up police to go after the slupee criminals.
Yep. You can smoke pot, but then you can’t satisfy your resulting munchies.
They should throw full 1 liter bottles at his limo.
No, no!
He said he’s NOT imposing on your freedom to get 32 oz of soft drink.
It’s just that the sellers HAVE TO serve it in two glasses.
HAVE TO. “Progressives” love that word combo.
Do I get a prize for being the only comment that doesn’t mention Big Gulp or Slurpee? Oooops.
This is the opposite Giuliani’s approach to bringing down the crime rate. Giuliani enforced all of the ‘little laws’ that weren’t being enforced ... his thinking being that if you don’t enforce all the laws, then people develop a mindset that it is ok to break the law.
freeze them first
That is exactly right. Now that he's freeing up all those jail cells, he can now put the evil pop drinkers in them. Where will he incarcerate all the incandescent light bulb junkies? -- Possibly in all the empty death row cells.
That’s right. Don’t you understand the liberal logic?
To liberals, drugs are cool, society is too uptight about drugs and related issues, drugs should be treated the same as alcohol, etc. So, the liberal view is that we should not be concerned about drug use.
On the other hand, people drinking a big gulp are getting too much sugar. So, for their own good, we have to downsize the drinks.
It does seem odd, that we’re supposed to be worried about people getting too much sugar, but not worried about them getting involved with drugs.
To be a good liberal, sometimes you have to have unusual reasoning abilities to justify liberal policies.
Police will be given the go ahead to gun you down in the street for smoking a cigarette while drinking a big gulp.
And to think this moron RINO will be reelected again..I think Bloomberg thinks he can collect more taxes on Pot than Big Gulp..
And to think this moron RINO will be reelected again..I think Bloomberg thinks he can collect more taxes on Pot than Big Gulp..
Prohibitionists take it in the shorts, again.
[ Let me get this straight. You can walk around with pot but Bloomberg will send the cops after you if you are drinking a 32 oz slurpee??? ]
Munchie Patrol Squad!!!!
Drop the Big Gulp and Doritoes and come out with your cheese dust encrusted hands up!
"Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while."
No salt, transfats or sugary drinks but drugs are just fine. Bloomberg is certifiably crazy!
Only if they have a direct shot.
This is exactly why people despise politicians
Catch-22...it generates more revenue and less cost to bust people for the slurpee...this way, people get high, develop a thirst and buy big drinks.
Devious, to say the least.
40-ouncers of malt liquor are also still okay in Herr Bloomie’s world.
Just what I was going to say. The guy is a loon. Also don’t forget if you donate food to the homeless he will confiscate it and if you smoke a cigarette in a park or in Times square in the street you’ll be busted. Oh yes and in your apartment. That was his latest decree last month - He wanted all landlords to send him a list of all the people who smoke in their apartments. Maybe next he will demand smokers wear the letter “S” on their arms and have the cops write “Smoker” on peoples windows.
What’s incredible to me is this a-hole has absolutely no authority whatsoever to do any of this crap yet people think he does. How about if he banned ipods or cellphones or computers or clothes? He demanded everyone walk around naked or banned food or banned breathing, would people still think he has the authority ? He just spews out his shiet week after week month after month without any approval from anybody without any protest from anybody, even Chuck Schumer is silent who holds press conferences at the drop of a hat, which is all why I claim New York city is run under despotism, because it freakin is!
Chicago has already done this. And quite frankly I think it’s a good idea. When it comes to “What do we need the cops to do?”, busting people for smoking marijuana is pretty low on my priority list.
Arrested. Not incarcerated.
Completely correct. And not that marijuana is a good thing or that smoking it is wise.
It’s a harmful vice, but not nearly as harmful as enforcing its prohibition.
if they allow medicinal pot (vs not enforcing the law) then those “patients” should immediatly have their driver licence susptended for the duration of their treatment.
Here’s what isn’t mentioned:
The current low level marijuana laws in NYC are unenforceable because they are morally repugnant to the vast majority of street beat cops.
Definitely over 30% of street beat cops in NYPD have used marijuana, and it’s probably closer to 80% have used it. Nearly 100% of NYPD street beat cops know people who both smoke marijuana and live productive and normal lives.
And yes, the street beat cops also know about the total fuck ups, but you rarely if ever see a total fuck up who only uses marijuana in NYC. IT is not a gateway drug in NYC, marijuana is now the drug of choice of people who consciously choose to NOT destroy themselves. There are plenty of ways and plenty of drugs available to destroy oneself in NYC, the end user has to repeatedly refuse offers for these harder drugs on a normal basis.
in NYC there is heroin that is now cheaper per high than marijuana, cocaine that is cheaper per high than marijuana.
Lethargic fatass stoners in NYC don’t last long, they get evicted and go be poor somewhere else.
On the other end of the spectrum, the artistic/creative industry people in NYC represent a much larger percentage of the marijuana user base in NYC than in the country in general, and they produce tens of billions of dollars in economic activity each year. Regular and casual and former marijuana users control much of the major industries in the city, and they are more powerful than the Drug Warriors industrial complex lobbyists who do not live, work and vote in NYC.
Which fascist hell hole do you live in?
No they haven't.
YES! The nanny state at it's control-freak wackiest...
Marijuana in Ohio is essentially decriminalized. Apparently, people here have recognized tying up law enforcement, courts, jails and prisons for something less harmful than alcohol should not be a priority, either.
Somehow, the state has not rotted and fallen into Lake Erie, despite the ramblings of people who support the failed War on (some) Drugs.
No. It's like nailing "fare-beaters" who jump over the turnstiles instead of paying the subway fare. When they turned their attention to busting them, they found that a huge percentage were already wanted for assault, robbery, rape, and so on. Same with weed on the street, in about 90 percent of the cases. That's what the cops are looking for.
The change in safety for normal grown-upsthose not flying on drugs as they walk down the streetafter Giuliani started these "public order" enforcement policies changed the city overnight. People started going out at night again, business boomed, hiring soared, etc.
Most small-use marijuana stops are winos and thugs, rather than white-knuckled, principled, Ron Paul-ites who talk about Ayn Rand, who are scarce in NYC. The real reason for this "relaxation" in enforcement is because it means fewer black arrests. That's good for those NYS Assemblymen who represent the relatives of felons from Brooklyn and upper Manhattan.
Giuliani understood law enforcement. Bloomberg understands . . . I'm not sure, maybe homosexuality?

But only folks with prescription to medical pot?
I’d be a lot more worried about the oxycodone and vicodin impaired drivers than someone who smoked some pot.
Are you at all aware of the current screening process for the NYPD?
You can openly admit to repeated marijuana use in the application and not be DQ’ed, (and strangely enough) it doesn’t even lower the chance of getting hired at this point if you are a blood relative of another NYPD officer.
Granted the total number of applicants to the NYPD has spiked in this recession and the large number of war vets returned to the civilian workforce, making the entire hiring process much more selective in recent years.
I’ve known/know a good number of prior and current NYPD and MTA cops, none of them were saints.
See what pot does to your brain, your made up statistics are ridiculous.
The percentage of people busted on the frisk and search low level marijuana arrests who had active warrants out was under 16%. (From a recent NYPost article on the subject) And less than half of those get prosecuted for the other charges.
If 90% of the people arrested in NYC for stop and frisk low level marijuana charges had warrants, every bed in every prison in NY State would be filled to 200%+ capacity just on stop and frisk prosecutions.
So thanks for the hyperbole.
Here are the hard statistics on stop and frisk in the city:
http://www.nyclu.org/issues/racial-justice/stop-and-frisk-practices
In 2011, 685,724 New Yorkers were stopped by the police.
605,328 were totally innocent (88 percent).
350,743 were black (53 percent).
223,740 were Latino (34 percent).
61,805 were white (9 percent).
341,581 were aged 14-24 (51 percent).
An entire generation of youths in NYC now genuinely and passionately HATE the NYPD to the core of their beings due to the decade long constant harassment by stop and frisks. Every young minority guy in the city knows multiple people who have been harassed and humiliated publicly by the NYPD during these stop and frisks.

Seriously, as a possible recruit to the NYPD, you admit to prior drug use or being fired for disciplinary reasons at a prior job, all you do is take another piece of lined paper and write out an explanation of the situation. You then sit on a chair for 3 hours to wait your turn to get a piss test just like every other applicant.
If it isn’t for hard drugs or some serious issue for prior job termination, it has no affect on the recruiting process, and hasn’t since 2003ish. IF your urine is clean, the process continues.
No they haven't.

Smoke?
All kidding aside, in case there was some question, the "90 percent" refers to this:
Most small-use marijuana stops are winos and thugs, rather than white-knuckled, principled, Ron Paul-ites who talk about Ayn Rand, who are scarce in NYC.
. . . That proportion is empirically derived, and if you live or work in NYC, obvious.
I used to live in NYC. My wife used to work around the corner from Wall Street.
We would talk about how Wall Street stunk like marijuana at 4-5pm on Fridays. One of her co-workers used to remark how much business the pot delivery people had in that area of the city & how much time they spent at/in office buildings.
Perhaps your knowledge of who all smokes marijuana in NYC is...limited.
Depending on the study, 35% to 55% of NYC high school teens have used marijuana.
FOr late teens and early 20’s, depending on the study, 50% to 80% of NYC College students have used marijuana.
And that is only those who admit to it in the surveys by the NYC School system and questionnaires given on college campuses.
There are very few young cops in NYC who haven’t used marijuana.
There isn’t a NYPD street cop who is under 30 who doesn’t know friends and family members who are regular or casual recreational marijuana users.
In NYC, it is what it is, it is not all that different than what it was in the 1920’s, and it will probably be like that for quite a few more years going forward.
Is this what passes as facts to lefties pushing drugs?
Until you find your cop stats you can quit bugging me, by the way used and tried is really two different things, you sound like a user, not someone who has tried it, or experimented with it.
