Mayor Bloomberg Is Right to Declare a War on Sugar
The Daily Beast ^ | June 2, 2012 | Michael Tomasky

Posted on 06/03/2012 6:43:57 AM PDT by CharlesThe Hammer

There’s only one way to say something like this, and it’s loud and proud and without apology: I wholeheartedly support Mike Bloomberg’s war on sugar. It’s unassailable as policy. Refined sugar is without question the worst foodstuff in the world for human health, and high-fructose corn syrup is little better. We are a fat country getting fatter and fatter, and these mountains of refined sugar that people ingest are a big part of the reason. The costs to the health-care system are enormous, so the public interest here is ridiculously obvious. Obesity is a killer. Are we to do nothing, in the name of the “liberty” that entitles millions of people to kill themselves however they please, whatever their diabetes treatments costs their insurers? We have this “liberty” business completely backward in this country, and if Bloomberg can start rebalancing individual freedom and the public good, God bless him, I say.

Maybe I am Old but we have mandatory PE in School. Now they claim its bullying or why play to keep score or time when running a race.

Lets let kids spend all their time on computers and other indoor games.

Doomburg’s edict is against the princilples of freedom.

Sugar is definatley not one of the better or essential foods, although very enticing. Educating the sugar abusing public would be more “American” than his edict.

I still see Darwin as more revelent here. Dogs that chase cars soon are out of our hair. At some point this obesity problem will resolve itself.

Bloomberg is a multi-billionaire.

Had he spent hundreds of millions on pro-exercise and pro-healthy eating private initiatives—instead of buying his mayorship, I’d applaud his efforts.

Way to go Vinnie.
Hey you wanna open up a Heart Attack Grill in Bloomberg’s backyard ? Why should Las Vegas have all the fun?

I’m not being sarcastic. I’m just amazed that the Bloomberg sheeple just keep on grazing. Grass might be all that they are allowed if he’s in office much longer.

I had a great childhood too. Came home, did my homework, took off on my bike, played ball, came home for dinner, worked on my Dynaco stereo amplifier kit - always had something to do. And if I came home too early, stepdad worried that I was sick.

Its good to see that NYC has been able to solve all their major problem. Now they can work on smaller problem like this.
Bloomberg and his ilk just crave control. They enjoy abusing power and flexing their muscles.
WOrse than Nazis...at least the Nazi Government allowed simple pleasures.....

The obesity epidemic is directly related to the abundance and access to COMPUTERS.

We work all day on our butts, then go home and sit at our computers, watch tv or play video games.

Next, nanny B. Will have everyone marching for an hour in the evening to burn calories.

If you want to really tackle the problem, computers would time out after an hour ... And not come on fer 12 hours, or tax the real culprit .. Tax computers.

If we want to outlaw bad things let’s outlaw illegitimacy - outlaw that because it is the main cause of violence, illegal gun activity, crime, drug addiction, poor grades, entrenched poverty, dying neighborhoods, illiteracy, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, sexual abuse, obesity, failing health, etc., etc.

Can we run some regression analysis of the above social problems with illegitimacy. Let’s see the correlation numbers and then let’s talk about what needs fixing. Correlation doesn’t mean causation, or does it? Let’s see the data!

This problem is really the one that the coward Bloomberg needs to address, but of course he won’t.

Hey you wanna open up a Heart Attack Grill..

I haven't been to one/it yet but will certainly have it on my 'to do' list if I ever make it to Vegas. That is where it's located now right?

Why are the liberals worried about this? Do you think, for even one moment, that Bloomberg cares about you or your health? If he was such a humanitarian, I guarantee you he wouldn’t have a private helicopter to fly around in. He’d have sold that helicopter and given the money to the poor. What’s his real motive?

The “F as in Fat” study presented by the Trust for America’s Health provided statistical information to show that the nation is becoming more obese. The states were ranked 1 to 50, from the highest percentage of obese people to the lowest. States 51 through 57 were, unfortunately, left out of the study. Sorry, Mr. President.

News broadcasts across the country scolded their respective localities for their gluttony. Rather than simply take the statistics at face value, however, I wanted to see if there is any relationship between the federal government’s social welfare programs and obesity, a link between Big Brother and Big Butts, so to speak. What I found proves no causality, of course, and a much more extensive analysis would need to be done to bear out my findings. The findings, however, are provocative.

In the Trust for America’s Health study, the most obese state in the country is Mississippi, followed by Alabama, West Virginia, Tennessee, and South Carolina, answering the question of why Mark Sanford had to fly all the way to Argentina to sow his oats. The least obese–and presumably the healthiest–states are Colorado, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Hawaii. I limited my investigation to these ten states.

I compared the TAH’s numbers with the federal government’s statistics on individual Food Stamp participation for each of the ten states. More effort was required to find this information than I would have imagined, until I discovered that the official name of the program, as of October 2008, is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Now it sounds much more like the bureaucratic black hole that it is. Here are the top five obese states, with their percentages of obesity and food stamp participation:

Mississippi – 32.5% of population is obese, 14.8% of pop. participates in SNAP
Alabama – 31.1% obese, 11.9% SNAP
West Virginia – 31.1% obese, 15.3% SNAP
Tennessee – 30.2% obese, 14.5% SNAP
South Carolina – 29.7% obese, 13.0% SNAP
Average of the top five: 30.92% obese, 13.9% SNAP

These numbers aren’t particularly striking until you compare them with the least obese states. I have listed them from 46 (Hawaii) to 50 (Colorado). Colorado, again, was the least obese state in the nation.

Hawaii – 21.8% obese, 7.4% SNAP
Rhode Island – 21.7% obese, 8.1% SNAP
Connecticut – 21.3% obese, 6.4% SNAP
Massachusetts – 21.2% obese, 7.7% SNAP
Colorado – 18.9% obese, 5.1% SNAP
Average of the bottom five: 21.0% obese, 6.9% SNAP

Back in the ‘50s, sacharrine was about the only sugar “substitute” and it left a bitter aftertatse. Real sugar was the mode for sweetening and far less people were overwieght. Technological “advances” have contributed to a lessening of exercise and other healthy habits - typical leftist rhetoric to blame everything but the problem.

Liberals sure do like that “war” word.

“War on Sugar”
“War on Poverty”
“War on Women”
“War on Cancer”
“War on Rush”

There must be thousands of “wars” these idiots are waging.

Bloomberg is only half right. Sugar is toxic in the amounts some people ingest it that’s for sure. But you can’t get there (less sugar consumption) from here (nanny state) What he’s proposing wont even make a dent. There’s powerful interests in America doing the same unhealthy things theyre doing now. All one has to do is walk down any grocery store food isles and see endless “low fat” foods for sale, as if fat was the problem. People are just not educated on why they are fat. Amazing really
