Mayor Bloomberg Is Right to Declare a War on Sugar
The Daily Beast ^ | June 2, 2012 | Michael Tomasky

Posted on 06/03/2012 6:43:57 AM PDT by CharlesThe Hammer

There’s only one way to say something like this, and it’s loud and proud and without apology: I wholeheartedly support Mike Bloomberg’s war on sugar. It’s unassailable as policy. Refined sugar is without question the worst foodstuff in the world for human health, and high-fructose corn syrup is little better. We are a fat country getting fatter and fatter, and these mountains of refined sugar that people ingest are a big part of the reason. The costs to the health-care system are enormous, so the public interest here is ridiculously obvious. Obesity is a killer. Are we to do nothing, in the name of the “liberty” that entitles millions of people to kill themselves however they please, whatever their diabetes treatments costs their insurers? We have this “liberty” business completely backward in this country, and if Bloomberg can start rebalancing individual freedom and the public good, God bless him, I say.

According to Michael Tomasky, apologist for the ever more ravenous Nanny State, we should thank NYC Mayor Bloomberg for his latest edict condemning evil soda pop. I've been converted: Out with personal responsibility, choice, and individuality...and in with bureaucratic dictat, paternalism, and the cult of the masterminds! Go "Bloomy" and the geniuses!

Prohibition worked so well in the past in the big apple.

Oh, and by the way, how’s that war on drugs working for you ?

The government by default will side with the weaklings. It is a policy of “majoring” the minorities into a thug revenge style collective against strong and well minded responsible individuals. It has nothing to do with functions of society, it is completely retarded, and it has everything to do with taking people’s money and lives for whatever “strong reasons” there is for it. And once people accept being weak for sugar, they accept the “organization” and codes to take over, all exploited under various guises and premeditations.

These people are cowards.

Indeed, if God was in the flesh, they would trash Him as a collective. That is the hysteria they want to detract with.

I think it’s excellent that Mayor Bloomie had admitted that New Yorkers are not intelligent enough to make simple health choices.

Now if only we could get him to prohibit them from voting in federal elections.

If it is so bad as Mr. Tomasky asserts then ban it - make it illegal. While you’re at it make alcohol, tobacco, hell - while we’re at it, Starbucks Coffee. Ban them, prohibit them in the name of, well, feelgoodism-control-subjugation.

Ban them, but hear this. Government then loses all rights to the tax money derived therefrom. I never once when buying something on the black market was asked to pay “tax.” And so it will be here if Tomasky had his silly ass way.

Yeah, Right on....let’s get rid of that Mexican food while we’re at it and hot dogs at ball games, all chips must go. Oh by the way, what’s the percentage of grade/high schools in N.Y have specific time set aside for physical exercise....hmmm
Bloomberg is proud that he takes the subway to City Hall, why doesn’t he lead by example and walk or ride a bike. Take the cops out of the patrol cars and have them walk or ride bikes(who cares about response time)
Hey New York, stop complaining, you put this clown in office. Ever since Linsey was elected, the city has been going wacko. Too bad Rudy isn’t in charge

This talk of “freedom” is absurd. No one’s freedom is being taken away.

Wrong. This is precisely how freedom is taken away. A crumb at a time. It won't stop with sodas. The author then goes on to say that it would be good to take away 10 oz burgers too. This new mandate is really because government is too involved in paying for our healthcare, paying for food, paying for housing,...

It’s unassailable except as GOVERNMENT policy.

If he’s right we need to outlaw sugar, not just large soda sizes.

“Refined sugar is without question the worst foodstuff...”

***

Bull Crap. Tofu is. LOL

Actually, no food is bad. Principally, it is how much you eat of it that can be harmful.

I’m diabetic, but I refuse to give up sugar entirely. However, unlike the old days when I would pour most of the sugar bowl into my tea, now I use a teaspoonful. I must be doing something right. The diabetes is under good control without insulin.

As bad as sugar is lack of exercise. Outlaw all cars, and all TV’s and all screens and entertainment of all kinds, including Broadway shows. New Yorkers should be forced, by law, to eat oatmeal and go on long marches. Oh yeah, shut down those damn subways. They are killing people. In the name of “transportation”.

You want to fight childhood obesity?

Get the kids off their fat a$$es and doing some physical exertion.
Turn off kid’s computers, cell phones.
Re-institute Phys. Ed. in schools.
Stop busing so kids can participate in after school activities instead of spending an hour or two riding around.

Heck, when I/we were in school we played sandlot football almost every day, rode our bikes 10+ miles to Biscayne Bays, etc.
Went to Dairy Queen every night for a chocolate malt trying the GAIN weight.
BTW, my friend’s father worked for Coca Cola so soft drinks were plentiful.

The sort of people who vote for the nanny state regulators are the sort of weaklings that need a keeper. Oddly they legitimize the concept of state control by their very weak nature. They have no interest in personal freedom because they are literally terrified envisioning themselves responsible for their own lives.

Why stop there? If sugar is bad, so are energy drinks, cigarettes, cigars, alcohol, anything with cholesterol in it, riding a bike without a helmet, cars that go faster than 35 mph (that’s all they’re crash tested for), hang gliding, parasailing, skydiving, BASE jumping, rock climbing, water skiing, snow skiing, power tools, firearms, fireworks, chainsaws, sharp knives, bathtubs, swimming pools (that kill more children than guns), tile floors that get slippery when wet, carpet that harbors mold and bacteria, lightning, large trees (kids can fall from them when climbing), fishhooks, buckets (can drown small children), the sun, video games, bowling, baseball, softball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer, lacrosse, golf, cell phones, turkey fryers, large dogs, house cats, hiking, standing in a floodplain, car jacks, toasters, AC power, stairs, ropes, power cords, strings, small objects that children can put in their mouths, razors, household cleaners, drain openers, loudspeakers, lead paint, lead bullets, lead fishing sinkers, gasoline, used motor oil, motorcycles, four wheelers, golf carts, wilderness areas, tall cliffs, airplanes, boats, jackhammers...

Heck. If we’re clammoring for government to save us from ourselves, let’s just mandate that everyone must live in a padded room and eat only carrots and celery for the rest of their lives. Bloomberg is a hero! Thank you, O’ Annointed One, for saving us from ourselves!

WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH, LONG LIVE USASOC!

This is a country that was founded on personal Liberty and Freedom. The Constitution was designed as a “No, Government, You CAN’T!” document.

Today, there are so many nosy busy-body, ‘there’s-got-to-be-a-law-against-that’ mentality types, that they have decided to make it THEIR business, what YOU and I CAN’T do!

The Mayor of New York City forgets that he is elected to REPRESENT, not LORD OVER the population of the city, just as Obama thinks he can LORD OVER America.

If I, a military veteran, walks along the sidewalk to one of my favored stops, and hears such nonsense, there might be cause for, in today’s world, to grab their smartphone.

We, the People, have become silent too long, on ANYBODY, at any level, who wishes to LORD OVER those within their sphere of control!

I say NO!
