Clinton in Arctic to see impact of climate change

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took a first hand look Saturday at the way a warming climate is changing the Arctic, opening a once frozen region to competition for vast oil reserves.

Experts here estimate the value of the Arctic's untapped oil alone -- not including natural gas and minerals -- at $900 trillion, making it a huge prize for the five countries that surround the Arctic if they can reach it.

Returning from a tour of the Arctic coastline aboard a Norwegian research trawler with scientists and government officials, Clinton told reporters that she learned "many of the predictions about warming in the Arctic are being surpassed by the actual data."

"That was not necessarily surprising but sobering," she said.

The United States wants to see that change managed by the Arctic Council, an advisory group composed of the Arctic's closest neighbours, even as other countries are drawn to the region for oil, gas and trade.

"A lot of countries will be looking at what will be a potential for exploration, as well as new sea lanes, and are increasingly expressing interest in the Arctic," Clinton said.

"We want the Arctic Council to remain the premier institution that deals with Arctic questions."

This whole Arctic oil thing is a red herring to try to get us to vote for the Sea Treaty we turned down in the 80’s.

“900 trillion” would be enough to provide 100% of USA usage for about 1000 years.

Yes, and 900 billion would supply the US for 1 year.

Oh yeah. She’s running.

Sounds to me like Obama's sending her to the most remote places he can think of, perhaps to keep her away from the political action at home. Perhaps he'll next send her to Bora Bora to represent the US in their annual Sea Slug festival.

Having Hillary show up should slow down any warming. She’s as cold as it gets.

The idiotic and anti-scientific warmers (hillary included)are so full of crap. The logic centers of their weakened brains must be infected, mutated or cancerous. The “world’s smartest woman” is such a fool.

Oh yeah. She’s running.

You do realize that all of the state filing deadlines are long passed, and that Hillary isn't on the ballot in a single state, don't you?
