Feds to Florida: halt non-citizen voter purge
Miami Herald ^ | May 31, 2012 | Marc Caputo

The Justice Department told Florida election officials that they must stop their non-citizen voters purge. Florida argues it is not violating any law.

The Justice Department ordered Florida’s elections division to halt a systematic effort to find and purge the state’s voter rolls of noncitizen voters.

Florida’s effort appears to violate both the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which protects minorities, and the 1993 National Voter Registration Act – which governs voter purges – T. Christian Herren Jr., the Justice Department’s lead civil rights lawyer, wrote in a detailed two-page letter sent late Thursday night.

State officials said they were reviewing the letter. But they indicated they might fight DOJ over its interpretation of federal law and expressed frustration that President Barack Obama’s administration has stonewalled the state’s noncitizen voter hunt for nine months.

Not if us Floridians can help it. I already called and left a message encouraging Gov. Scott to ignore the DOJ. Let them sue us. It'll be past the election by the time it's settled.

Nothing make it legal for non-citizens to vote, hence no law of any kind prohibits a state from ensuring that non-citizens do not vote. The Justice Dept. is depending on being able to intimidate Florida, not on being able to have their opinion upheld.

Hitler was elected democratically.

Not true, Hitler never WON an election, in fact he lost dramatically.

He was appointed to his position.

So, it’s official. Non-citizens are now a recognized minority group!

There was also gun running through Florida that it is thought went to Marxist insurgents in Central America. Florida should charge Holder and issue arrest warrants against all involved.

*******

Has the federal government gone insane?

1. I mean, when did it become a crime to stop non-citizens from voting in our elections, especially in our presidential elections?

2. Is the federal government unbelievably telling Florida that it must allow non-citizens to vote, say, in the presidential election in Nov. 2012?

3. Again, has the federal government gone insane?

4. Why not take the federal government's demand to its extreme and tell everyone in world to come to Florida so that they can vote in the upcoming Nov. 2012 presidential elections?

5. Does being an American citizen have any value any more?

6. Sick. Sick. Sick.

You write that “no law of any kind prohibits a state from ensuring that non-citizens do not vote.”

According to the linked article, there is a law that prohibits Florida from doing it at this time. If the state tries to purge someone who’s actually a citizen, it might take time for the citizen to provide documentation, for the state to evaluate it, and for the citizen to be included in voter lists sent out to polling places. Therefore, under the National Voter Registration Act, the state can’t do a purge program within 90 days before a primary or general election. Florida needed to do this earlier (I think the primary is in mid-August).

It’s not like this is a new issue. Why did the geniuses in Florida wait until after the deadline before they tried to start purging?

I guess the geniuses want to have their cake and eat it, too. They can say they were trying to purge the rolls but know they won't be able to do so prior to the upcoming election. If they're serious, they'll work on some way to check up on people at the polls or better still, to have INS officials around all the polling places. If the Black Panthers can have poll watchers the INS can. But, then again, if they were serious, you're right, why did they wait.

Thanks for your phone call of support to the Florida Governor's office, Liberalh8ter. This is what we're here for!

I posted a message on the Florida FR state forum for the three Chapter Leaders and each member of the three Florida FR chapters ( which means EVERY FLORIDA FREEPER !) to contact the Guv's office to tell him we have his back in this battle.

It looks like the Guv is gonna say "Nuts" to Attorney General Eric Himmler and his Ministry of JustUs. But he has to hear from us if WE mean business like he is evincing so far!

Floridian or not, every freeper concerned about the integrity of our voting system should contact Governor Scott in Tallahassee.

This is where it's in dispute, but you wouldn't hear that in the mainstream media. The VRA prohibits purges from being done within 90 days of a federal election. Florida's August 16th primary is not a federal election. The DOJ claims that because there are congressional seats at play, this makes it a federal election.
