MANCHESTER, CT (WFSB) -
The mother of Omar Thornton, the man who opened fire at Hartford Distributors in Manchester killing eight people, has set up a memorial fund in his name and is scheduling a benefit on the two-year anniversary of the mass shooting.
That's not sitting well with the union that represents workers at HDI, and now the union is speaking out.
According to a website set up by Thornton's mother, Lillie Holliday wants to spread awareness about her son and institutionalized racism.
Thornton, who was black, blamed racism at HDI for the reason he went on the shooting rampage in August 2010.
The first thing viewers see when arriving at the website for Thornton are words the family uses to remember him:
"Son, Brother, Uncle, Entrepreneur, Friend, Hardworking, Loving, Giving, Kind"
Holliday spoke with Channel 3 Eyewitness News' Matthew Campbell and said that she wants to use the donations that are made to launch an independent investigation into the allegations that Thornton was a victim of workplace racism.
However, on the website, the purpose of the Omar Sheriff Thornton Memorial Fund, "is a means to provide continuing educational programs that bring awareness to the evils of racism. Your financial contribution will assist in shaping a safer environment for our families and loved ones."
No information about which educational programs that would benefit from the money were mentioned.
In a statement released after the shootings, Holliday said, "My deepest prayers and sympathy goes out to all of the families who have lost loved ones in this tragic incident, particularly the mothers like me, who will grieve forever. No one deserves what has happened in this sad ending to so many decent lives. But, please know that while you're hurting, I am a mother, who is also hurting and searching for answers that neither of us may ever get."
Holliday went on to say that she would never attempt to justify Thornton's actions, but said he is still her son and she would have his back, as any mother would.
Holliday said that as a mother she didn't want any other mothers to experience what she did in losing a son as a result of the impact of racism in the workplace.
Thornton, before the shooting rampage, said that he was suffering from racism at Hartford Distributors, but Officials and employees at HDI said there was never any racism at the facility.
Christopher Roos, a manager of the Teamsters local, said she understands that Thornton was Holliday's son and that she loved him, but said the victims of the mass shooting were not racists and putting that label on them makes "more wounds."

The website says she is starting the fund to help educate people about institutionalized racism. Also states her son lost his life because of workplace racism.
What a slap in the face to the families of the people her son murdered.

Among other things, the statement reveals an industrial-strength mixture of stupidity and vanity.
The killer's full name was Omar Sheriff Thornton. What are the odds that mom couldn't spell Omar Sharif, and did not bother to check before naming her son? I bet Omar's grade school and high school classmates had heaps of fun with that name.
