(CNN) - Newt Gingrich, speaking outside an event raising money for presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, said the event's host, Donald Trump, was not distracting the Republican Party with his questions about the president's birth certificate.
"Gov. Romney's not distracted," Gingrich said in Las Vegas. "The Republican Party's not distracted. We believe that this is an American-born job-killing president. Other people may believe that he was born somewhere else and still kills jobs, but that's an argument over background."
Gingrich's comments came as Romney and Trump convened with campaign donors at Trump's International Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip for a fundraising event that was expected to bring in millions of dollars for the presumptive GOP nominee. Romney has been under pressure from Democrats to condemn Trump for his questioning of President Barack Obama's place of birth.
Gingrich, who battled Romney for the GOP nomination before dropping his bid in April, said he personally believed President Obama was born in Hawaii, and is thus constitutionally eligible to be president, and that the focus should remain on the president's jobs creation record.
Asked if the so-called "birther" conspiracy had racist undertones, Gingrich pointed to other African-American politicians who do not face similar lines of questioning.

Newt is being shrewd.
They are concerned about his doubts resonating, Obama’s own Kenyan born writer pamphlet is what ignited this.
Gingrich is so phony as he knows full well the legitimate questions surrounding this topic.
Let’s face it, the truth will never be known, or never known before the statute of limitations has run out.

It’s too bad we couldn’t convince the fundamentalists they weren’t voting for pastor and the women they weren’t voting for husband.. Newt would have been great president. Hopefully Mitt will be a less terrible president than the occupier in chief.

I agree. It is astonishing how frightened the "beltway conservatives" are about even mentioning the controversy over Obama's Photoshopped birth certificate, and self promoting "born in Kenya" biography. Newt gets the issue in the news, without incurring the Krauthammer/Krystal/Noonan ire.
Exactly right. His own Bio said he was born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia. That’s pretty darn specific. When Newt and other Romney surrogates are being interrogated by the press why don’t they simply turn the question on the interviewer and ask them why the opening sentence in Obama’s bio reads as it does? These so-called journalists insult their own intelligence by not getting to the bottom of a very basic question.
Born? No, he was hatched.
