US commandos parachuted into N. Korea: report

US and South Korean special forces have been parachuting into North Korea to gather intelligence about underground military installations, a US officer has said in comments carried in US media.

Army Brigadier General Neil Tolley, commander of US special forces in South Korea, told a conference held in Florida last week that Pyongyang had built thousands of tunnels since the Korean war, The Diplomat reported.

"The entire tunnel infrastructure is hidden from our satellites," Tolley said, according to The Diplomat, a current affairs magazine. "So we send (South Korean) soldiers and US soldiers to the North to do special reconnaissance."

"After 50 years, we still don't know much about the capability and full extent" of the underground facilities," he said, in comments reported by the National Defense Industrial Association's magazine on its website.

Tolley said the commandos were sent in with minimal equipment to facilitate their movements and minimize the risk of detection by North Korean forces.

At least four of the tunnels built by Pyongyang go under the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea, Tolley said.

"We don't know how many we don't know about," he admitted.

Among the facilities identified are 20 air fields that are partially underground, and thousands of artillery positions.

Loose lips there General....

Is this stuff happening because 0bama is much more hawkish than we think?

Or is it happening because 0bama is a weak commander-in-chief and the generals are running rough-shod over him?

or it’s disinformation. I just find it hard to believe we could put undetected boots on the ground in the most tightly controlled place on earth. Maybe we’re just trying to get the NK’s running all over the place on a wild goose chase.

Something about this story does not sound right. What US General would be authorized to alert the enemy through the media we have been surreptitiously inserting special forces into a country we have no formal war with.Who authorized him to announce this?

Bingo.

They’ve just had a leadership change. It might even be true, but I bet there’s a reason we’re saying it now.

Another possibility is that we have a mole that is giving us info, and the commando parachuting story is to give cover to the mole.

I agree. One would think dropping troops/commandos in foreign and hostile territory would be far more clandestine.

I think you are right on. No way we went in there. We should. We need to wipe out Porky and his regime as he is way more unstable and erratic then pops was. The troops would defect like crazy to us IMHO.

In a just America, this guy would be thrown in Leavenworth, and the key melted down to be used again.

or our satellites really ARE that good, and we can “see” into the tunnels via ground-penetrating radar, spectrographic analysis of air coming from the ventilation system, etc.

This wasn’t a careless leak. It was done deliberately, and for a reason.

Loose lips there General....

The "loose lips" are entirely intentional.

The Japanese have done exactly the same mind games, knowing that the North Koreans will go to extremes to eliminate such putative clandestine activities.

Indeed, Japanese authorities have alluded to their extensive network of spies in North Korea. (The best part was their reference to the "警察庁 controllers" of these spies; the North Koreans probably expended many man-years trying to find and eliminate these agents.)
