Shakil Afridi Helped U.S. Get Osama—So Why Is He In Prison?
IBD Editorials ^ | May 25, 2012 | Editor

Allies: The name Shakil Afridi may not mean anything to you, but it should. He's the Pakistani who bravely helped the U.S. track down Osama bin Laden. For his pains, he just got 33 years in a Pakistani prison.

Afridi, a Pakistani physician, believed enough in the U.S. mission and in bringing the world's most wanted terrorist, Osama bin Laden, to justice that he helped the CIA find the reclusive terrorist. He should be rewarded — not punished.

Yet, a Pakistani court sentenced him to 33 years in prison for "treason" and, adding insult to injury, a fine of about $3,500.

Of course, we're told the court that found him guilty is actually a "tribal" court, applying highly idiosyncratic law that is both local and tribal. Had it been a Pakistani government court, he might well have been executed for the crime of treason.

That's small comfort, since he'll serve his term in Peshawar Central Jail — a vile, corrupt hellhole in which he'll be a target for both the Taliban and al-Qaida. Afridi's chances of serving out his term alive are virtually nil.

What's especially upsetting about this is that Pakistan is nominally an ally with the U.S. We say nominally because it in fact acts routinely to undercut U.S. interests, and to aid the Taliban and other radical fundamentalist Islamist groups in the region. Some ally.

the United States must say....no conditions at all...he is out of prison, and here if he wants to be, and the discussion is over.

Is this a trick question? He’s in jail because Pakistan is *not* our friend,in spite of any claims that might be made by their government or ours. The Navy and the CIA had to keep the Pakistanis in the dark lest somebody tip Bin Laden off.

simple - Obama gave him up so as to claim maximum credit for himself. It is a mystery to me why any operative in the intelligence field would take on a CIA assignment.

Why, you ask? The answer is very simple. No one in this entire administration has the balls of a cockroach and none of the Dems are willing to kick the Paki’s square in the nuts.

They should lose all funding that we give them. This is like saying that they are not are ally when we have declared any country open game if they harbor terrorist. This needs to be addressed on every news outlet. Our president is a fool if he thinks this does not matter. Well he is a even bigger fool then he looks now.

You're the first person on this thread to provide the correct answer.

The CIA didn't give him up. The Seals certainly didn't give him up.

It was some loose-lipped dumb bass in Obama’s administration that leaked this highly secret intel source.

The poor SOB was helping the U.S. His reward was the loss of his freedom and probably his life.

null and void to Sergeant Tim

Before he is done I fully expect him to release the names, addresses and phone numbers of anyone anywhere in the world who has ever provided any information to agency workers.

The damage to US intel will last multiple generations.

I don’t think Obama is stupid enough to do that. He may desire to do it but I doubt he would/will. He has to know and understand he will have a lot less protection after he is out of office and he also has to know he would pi$$ off way to many of the wrong type of people.

I think that the proposal is to reduce the money 10%. The figure that I heard was 33 million, and Lindsie Graham said that the total was 330 million. That’s REALLY gonna get their attention (not!).

I’d like to know why the good doctor was charged with treason? Was Bin Laden a Pakistani?

BTW, if you’re wondering why Pakistan is remotely considered an “ally”, you can thank Condi Rice for a lot of that. Immediately after 9/11, Pakistan was left off of the list of enemies thanks to her insistence, “W” went with her recommendation.
