I think that "Chalking this up only to race" is a strawman, and its one that I often see writers invoke when talking about white resentment and Obama.

It is wrong to believe Barack Obama shouldn't be president because he's black. That you have other reasons along with those--even ones that rank higher--doesn't make it excusable. Likely those other reasons are themselves tied to Obama being black.

Here I am in western Appalachia aka Central Kentucky. 60% of all the families in my county are on some type of welfare. SIXTY percent! Think of that... Amazing isn’t it, and the County budget... Well I heard on the Radio that it was RAISED to... Wait for it... Five and one half million dollars. Population for the county is around 1500 or so people.

All of the major industries left years ago. The last ones are Gate manufacturing and Metal recycling. So what do we do here for the most part. Agriculture, many are Amish the rest are old mom and pops. The kids want to stay, but work is hard to come by and only the ones who start or in a few cases inherit a small business can do so.

So is it any wonder that the democrats here voted against Obama and his worthless policies that destroy small business and family farms.

Herman Cain is a racist because he doesn't think Obama should be re-elected. Alan Keyes was a racist when he tried to stop Obama from becoming a US Senator.

How are they going to convince these white Democrats that they have to vote for Obama to prove they aren't racist? Some of them don't take The New York Times, The Atlantic, or The Nation. Some of them don't even listen to NPR.
