Rep. Issa might not have the votes to push forward Holder contempt charge
The Hill ^ | 5/22/2012 | Jordy Yager

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) might not have the votes in his own committee to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress.

A number of Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee are wary of moving forward with Issa’s proposed measure, putting the powerful chairman in an awkward position as he attempts to build support for the move.

Two of the committee’s 23 Republicans have declined to support the measure at this point, while five other GOP panel members did not respond to repeated requests for comment over the last two weeks. When compared with the 16 Republicans on the committee who have actively been speaking in favor of the measure, the silence, lack of outspoken support and desire by these eight GOP caucus members to avoid the issue could be a problem for Issa.

Republican leadership has been hesitant and reluctant to voice its support for Issa’s move, possibly owing to the chairman’s inability to guarantee the measure’s passage in his own committee.

For more than a year, Issa has fervidly investigated the Justice Department’s (DOJ) role in approving controversial “gun walking” tactics used in Operation Fast and Furious. Issa has regularly hinted that the tactics must have been approved at the highest levels of the DOJ and in October issued a second subpoena for thousands of documents and records in an attempt to discover who was involved.

Issa says the DOJ has stopped producing documents for the committee and is violating a congressional subpoena. And earlier this month, he began circulating a draft copy of a resolution that would find Holder in contempt of Congress.

But support for the proposed measure has been slow to build.

Who are the Two? Why did we work so hard to give them the Majority?

“After spending nearly all of last year quiet on the issue, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) wrote Holder last week to prod him to turn over the thousands of remaining documents requested under Issa’s subpoena.”

Yeah, that prodding sure is effective. /s

“The Republican leadership’s hesitance to fully back the contempt measure is due in part to the drastic nature of the rarely used maneuver and those members’ desire to make certain all other diplomatic attempts at getting the documents are exhausted.”

“All other diplomatic attempts” weren’t just exhausted - they were DOA. It’s been a year since they first called for documents!!!

“But their hesitance might also be due to Issa’s outspoken nature. The powerful lawmaker frequently takes to a wide array of cable news shows to lob verbal attacks at Democrats and the White House.”

They should ALL be so outspoken in attacking! Jeez - no wonder we keep getting shafted. WHEN will we ever fight fire with fire????

Boner is now accessory to murder, or at least harboring a future fugitive.

200+ and climing daily dead Mexicans, and at least 1 US Border Agent, because of Ricky H and his man friend Racky 0.

What's the Mexican govt gonna do? Declare war? We are already under an invasion siege from them.

In the true sense of what we are doing, this is how the system is supposed to work.
Where it breaks down is when (say) the ‘leader’ states “We don’t want the sun to shine anymore” his ‘followers’ automatically lock step with him.
The opposition will be 100% against it but will not give you a reason why, while we all know it is just ‘politics’ as usual.
The ‘sad part’ of it all is if the guy that wants no sunshine ‘changes his/her mind’ the other side will change theirs also.

‘Cry me a River(on cue)’ Boner should either get a pair or step down, neither will happen so it is up to the citizens of Ohio to unelect him and the rest of us to elect people with gonads to unseat him if he sneaks in again.

They have stalled this long enough so if it opens now the ‘other side’ can claim election year politics (the reason they stalled anyhow - if they ever intended to go forth).

Much like “I work so hard so I can earn money buy to more coke to make me work harder to earn more money so I can buy more coke etc..”

My question is: why didn’t this list come out when there was still time to put up primary opponents against them?

Todd Platts is not going to rock the boat, he is not running for reelection. We need to clean all those people out, they probably have so many skeletons in their closets they can’t close the doors.

Even if we don’t have enough votes, having the vote at all is embarrassing to Holder and the Obama Administration.

since when do we need to vote to decide to arrest criminals?

Probably because it's the US Att'y General.
