Washington (CNN) -- A US Airways Express flight crew reported seeing what looked like a flare with a smoke trail in the vicinity of its aircraft while on approach to Philadelphia International Airport on Tuesday.

According to authorities, what the crew witnessed remains a mystery. The aircraft with 34 passengers and three crew members landed safely.

It was probably just a flare with a smoke trail.

Agree, probably a weather flare.

A mystery? A mystery implies, no ‘idea’; no clue; no possibiliies; no probabilities. So, what- at the least and most - might/could this be?

Had a sighting 2 nights ago over Lake Champlain wobbling fast object changing colors chased by fighter jet north to south, watched through binoculars; second time this happened in 5 years.

During the past couple of months, the nights have been very clear here in Arizona. You should see how many drivers swerve to miss Venus in the evenings.

If it had hit the aircraft it would be classified as a frayed wire in the center fuel tank.

A frayed wire? Couldn’t that generate a spark of static electricity? They say Jet A becomes even more volatile after it gets heated.

Was the unknown rising or falling? If the latter, could be incoming space debris, either natural or manmade. Thanks Free ThinkerNY.

Distress flare from them for sure, apparently the Greys had them surrounded and about ready to finish them off. Too bad they didn’t make it out on time to head for Dulce.

If this were 50+ years ago and over Eastern New Mexico, it would have been me and my best friend sending the expensive bottle rockets off in advance of the F-100's flying by.

Did that a lot.

During WWII an American cruiser spotted Venus and began firing anti aircraft guns at it.

Their radar ever locked on it which I have no idea how that happened.

Based on your very thorough chart I must conclude it was either swamp gas or a weather balloon.

A couple of years ago I started shooting my guns at Venus. I unloaded everything, but nothing happened except a slight move to the left.

Sounds like a classic case of swamp gas to me.
