California has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation. But one wouldnt know that going to the firing range these days. AR-15s and AK-47s are the must-have guns of choice. How can that be?
Every time California tightens up the assault weapons ban, the gun industry finds a way around it. The latest example involves a tiny device...

Precisely why you will never find me even violating the airspace of this hostile foreign country.
California is crazy.
You used to be able to shoot anything you wanted when I lived there.
And Smoking while you shoot is Verboten!
Doesn’t sound very “scary” at all! Nevertheless Soviet Kalifornistan should still be sold to the Chinese and a wall built around it;)
A deadly “bullet button”? These people are insane. Absolutely certifiable.
The comments section of this story is refreshing.
Maybe Californians are getting fed up, too.
Next they’ll won’t allow a ramrod to be carried on your muzzle loader.
Yea, I really was stoked by that. Maybe the rats will get run out eventually. The state might be totally broke by then... but free...
It’s beyond ridiculous.
I bought my first detachable mag rifle in ca.
I shot my first AK47 in ca
First Mac 10
Of all the stupid nonsense. What’s next?
That looks a little like a broomhandle Mauser or some such.
It’s a beautiful state that is full of nippleheads.
It is.
My point is that it was designed in 1896 and defeats these stupid Feinswine laws.
The SKS is banned in CA. For a little while, they actually went door to door to collect them.
When I left in 1974, it was still a conservative, pro-business, pro-growth place. So don’t blame me.
BTW the chinese copied the C96 and used it during the Boxer rebellion.
They invented that side ways “gangsta style”
They would hold the pistol sideways on full auto to use the inherent muzzle rise as a room sweeper.
The place was still cool in 1982 hen I arrived.
Ten years later... not so much.
How? Its a fixed mag gun.
It is a historically important firearm and a lot of fun to shoot.
1981
BTW
My Grandfather served on the China road
Do I constantly have to remind you Californiphobes that Jim Robinson and Free Republic’s servers reside in California?
As a young officer, Winston Churchill carried one of those during the Boer war. The old broom handle was quite popular.
My late father was at Saipan, New Caledonia, the battle for Okinawa, China occupation at Tsing Tao, Korean war and early Vietnam.
I loved the Corps series, in fact I have them all. He is a great writer of military events.
Yes he did.
As I said, it’s historically important.
Your Pop got around.
He was in communications, so he was busy. I remember my mom converting one of his old uniforms to my size at 3 or 4 years old with a little pint-sized bolt-action toy rifle. They’d dress me up like that to visit him at the commo platoon he was in charge of.
These 'Bullet Buttons' have been around for years. Somehow, CA State Senator Leland "Rerand" Yee found out about them during the time he wasn't shoplifting or cruising for hookers in San Francisco, and he's so mad he's practically about to hurl the shark fin soup and boiled cat meat that he had for dinner.
I used to live in that douchebag's district. One day a bunch of Chinese ladies came to my door asking me if I was voting for Rerand and I slammed the door in their faces.
Anyway, all this CBS report will do is sell more 'California-legal assault rifles', but if a bill ever does come to the floor banning guns in California it's a guarantee that it will pass both houses and get signed by Governor Egghead Brown.
The California Department of Justice might urge caution on this because of ex post facto laws concerning legally owned CA military-type semiauto rifles.
Plenty of fun watching it play out.
Cool.
Most if my family don’t understand the Military members.
We just lost one last week. He was a signalman on the USS Forestall in Vietnam
RIP Uncle
Looks like the sights might be a bit obstructed.... were you just supposed to shoot from the hip?
That was a stripper clip. You mated the populated clip to the top of the weapon with the bolt open, pushed down on the top round, and they fed into the magazine (which in the C96 was actually a double-stack fixed box mag) and hopefully latched in place. You then removed the empty stripper clip, which closed the bolt and readied the weapon for action. It is more than a little fiddly and was easy to screw up when you had all the time in the world to load, more so under stress.
Here is a video of the basic sequences for a Broomhandle.

Of course, not knowing anything about weapons, they didn't realize that anyone with the smallest amount of experience could re-load another 10 round mag in a couple of seconds and continue on their rampage.
2. So now, any CA magazine loaded rifle needs a pen type device to push a pin so the magazine can be extracted and supposedly slow down the carnage.
Really? I've seen the set up while trying to decide which mag-fed rifle to buy. Geeze, again, it would take all of 3 seconds for the bad guy to pull the device out of his pocket and push that stupid button to release the magazine and put another in. These anti-gun people are just damn a** stupid.
Here's idea Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown, allow everyone to open carry in Calif and watch the gangsters back off. The lowest crime rates are in the highest open carry and CCW States! It's a fact! Don't believe me? Check FBI statistics.
You want Los Angeles and San Francisco to have less crime, then let citizens carry!!! How often do you or anyone see responsible carrying citizens fire their open carry or CCW weapons in other States? How often? Give me a number. Doubt you can.
I can give you countless times (Web stories) that good citizens have used their 2nd Amendment rights to defend themselves against home invasions, car-jackings, rape, murder, mayhem. Shall I go on Mr. Brown? The stats are there for you to read. Do some research.
Oops, I forgot, you think that if you were to outlaw guns, then they will all disappear? All guns will magically fade into the mist? All the gangsters will have NO access to weapons, right? There will be no underground access or international access to weapons, right? I can't believe how naive you people are about weapons.
I have legal weapons in accordance with California and Federal law. I have no children in the house where they are stored and none are loaded with ammunition. However, if ANYONE attempts to invade my home and threaten the life of myself or my wife, I will defend such as is my right.
Rest in peace, Shipmate.
As for California law, yes they can dictate certain restrictions, but since the latest USSC ruling, they are limited. That latest ruling was one of the best for decades. They said, WE, have a right to own guns, according to the 2nd Amendment. Didn't really think I'd see that in my time. Too bad it was 5 to 4...still we won! It won't be over-turned anytime soon.
“Here’s idea Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown, allow everyone to open carry in Calif and watch the gangsters back off.”
Just to be a pain-in-the-butt, I like to remind folks that it was Ronald Reagan that called for the banning on open carry of loaded weapons when he was Governor (and got it). It was in response to the Black Panthers showing up on their marches and the courthouse steps with their rifles and shotguns.
I bring it up as a reminder that NO candidate is 100% PERFECT. Of course that argument was more useful when trying to decide between the candidates 6 months ago and disregarding the 10% to 20% of things we disagreed with them on.
It is also a reminder that bad laws often are here to stay for a long, long time. And only lead to worse decisions.
As a former aviation gator Navy squid for many years, I found it to be an honor to be a Marine "sea-going bellhop". Although, they did piss me off when they came aboard and bought up all the ship's goodies...haha. Still, gotta love a Marine.

Some SKS can be converted to have detachable mags. Others came in with detachable mag systems fitted.

I left in 95 and it was already on the way to not being one. Not my fault either.
I didn't know that about Reagan. In this day however, I lean towards the citizenry being armed and open carrying. In Reagan's day, things had not progressed to point of socialism and so close to anarchy, as the world and even the US is heading towards.
Again, arm every citizen like Switzerland does, or used to. The crime rate will plummet as it has over the last years, due to the bad guys knowing that citizens will no longer take their crap while buying arms and ammunition at an incredible rate. Wish I had known and bought Ruger stock.
Do you or anyone really believe that local law enforcement decreased crime? I don't. I think the bad guys have realized they are going to get deaded when they attack nowadays. I read on this and other forums every day about so many that defend their homes and lives with guns.
Let's think liberal for a moment and that the USA shuts down every gun manufacturer tomorrow. So what happens to the millions of guns and billions of rounds? They just disappear? Okay, let's go further into the future and all those arms rust away because Colt, Smith&Wesson, and all other American gun companies have been long defunct.
So what of Sig Souer, Glock, Russian arms, Eastern European arms, et al? Do they go away, also? No, of course not. They will continue to supply a legitimate market and even the black market. Such weapons may get more expensive if the American manufacturers don't exist, but they WILL continue to supply the bad guys with arms. Besides, it would take decades to destroy the existing US arsenal of guns. Guns and to a lessor extent cartridges are pretty sturdy.
I guaran-damn-tee that the gangsters in LA, Detroit, Chicago, Philly, NY, etc. will have access to arms into the far far future. SO, what's the answer?
Citizen ownership and open carry in every State. I'm okay with some training to carry. I don't see that as a 2nd Amendment infraction. I see it as logical and common-sense in this day. I don't want every dumb-ass carrying who has never fired a weapon. Just talking about familiarization firing (FAMFIRE) once or twice.
“I think the bad guys have realized they are going to get deaded when they attack nowadays. I read on this and other forums every day about so many that defend their homes and lives with guns.”
In the news lately here in Washington State there have been numerous home invasions. Several of them ended with the homeowner drawing a weapon, shooting through a door, or killing the perps. In one instance the homeowner fired at the fleeing truck as they drove down the street. All the cop at the scene had to say was something like “It was a white pickup truck that probably has the rear window shot out”. After another a rash of such incidences, one of the top cops said “It is open season on criminals”. Although I think he borrowed that line from a former state senator!
I remember reading about two teenaged California boys who made some forestry people mad at them by paying $30 or something for a mail-order Boyes anti-tank rifle (British, either .50 BMG or 20mm caliber) and shooting it in the woods. The weather being dry, the muzzle blast started a brushfire in the leaf-litter.
