I’m trying to remember, but iirc, Perot was limited pro-choice on abortion. I could be wrong about that, though.
Also, the reform party was brand new, a vehicle created by Perot (and then abandoned.)
The Constitution Party is serious about building a legitimate alternative party.
But, the bottom line is in the chart. Only one of those candidates is a conservative.
That would make him different from Perot (who has a huge lake house ten miles from me.)
Perot was too corrupt and had fed to long and hard on the public trough for me to consider him. Everything I hate about crony capitalism he personally symbolized if you knew his history.

Well that wasn’t the point of my comparison, but on the one issue I was aware of at the time (”the Giant Sucking Sound”) Perot was without question ahead of his time.
And pretty much standing boldly all alone, saying so.

My point was, we had two candidates at the time. Perot siphoned off enough, to in some people’s view, change the results of the election.

And it's really sad that no third party has any chance in this so-called democracy. Perhaps if we had run-off elections like they do in France, that would be a step in the right direction.

It is very important for Romney to have some kind of challenge from the right. He has already floated some serious left-wing trial balloons:
gay adoption
gay couples
abortifacients
partial ObamaCare
He will soon begin talking about “revenue enhancement”, another “blessing” he brought to Massachusetts.

That's actually hilarious. The GOP elite don't care what we think! McCain's nomination in 2008 provided that. So it's either vote for Romney, then go home and take a pepto bismol. Or do anything else, and let Obama win.

Of course. I would hope that you you knew what I meant. I was using the word "democracy" in it's broadest sense. Americans do not vote on every issue. We elect officials who then vote on every issue.

The Constitution Party attorney general candidate in Ohio pulled 200,000+ votes in a recent election. Bush defeated Kerry in Ohio by only 136,483 votes.
In Virginia, Goode is polling 5%.
This is a state-by-state election and not a national vote. No Republican has ever won without Ohio, and Romney’s electoral path is so narrow right now that he needs both Ohio and Virginia.
So, Goode can cause Romney some serious headaches and maybe keep Romney to the right.
Oh, yes, absolutely. But unfortunately that time is past. There should have been just one challenger from the right to Romney. IMHO, that should have been Gingrich.
But there were two: Gingrich and Santorum. And for awhile, Bachmann and Perry also. The right was split, so Romney snuck in.
These are past mistakes (which the right will probably repeat again in the future). So now it's either Romney or Obama. Rally around one or the other. Sad, isn't it?

You WANT us to have enough support to be worrisome, but not enough to cause Romney to lose crucial states.

For a third party to be viable, it would need to start building at a local level, and build from there. It would need to get candidates elected to city, then county, the state, the national offices. Most third parties don’t last long enough for such a long-term development.

I’d focus on the region most responsive to my message, and then I would go after each office available.
However, I’d still participate in the big name races, simply because they are awesome for name recognition and unity of effort.

What you say is true, but these are not normal times. The effort may be beginning now. I know that if Willard is the GOP nominee, I will be changing my registration the next day.
In 2000 Ralph Nader received 97,000 votes in FL alone and deprived Al Gore the presidency.
A vote for Goode is a vote for Obama.
It is a little late for that this election. The winner will be from one of the two major parties. All a thrid party can do at this point is take away enough votes to cause one of the other two to lose. You can bet that Team Obama is praying for a strong conservative 3rd party this cycle.

I hope you're right. But what I fear is that what will really happen is that the Republican party survives, as the country-club party. And there will also be a strong conservative party.
In a three-way race, the non-lib vote will be split. The lib's will therefore win it all.
I see your point. But for me, here's the bottom line. I'm going to do whatever Team Obama DOESN'T want me to do. Team Obama wants me to withhold my vote for Romney and go third-party.
Team Obama doesn't want me to vote for Romney. So I'm going to hold my nose and do just that.
I can sure understand those folks who want to send a message to the GOP elite. But I can assure you that the elite aren't listening to us. If they were listening, they would have learned from McCain's loss in 2008.
If you live in a deep-blue state, e.g., CA, NY, then you can vote for who ever you please as it won’t make a difference. But, you can still donate effectively as that method of support knows no bounds. On the other hand, if you live in a GW Bush 2004 state that went into the 0bama column in 2008, then you have the duty. 0bama must be defeated; take one for the team.

The most frustrating thing to me about our poor GOP field this year is how good our farm team is. We have a lot of potential candidates for 2016 and 2020. We just need to concentrate this year on ditching Obama and a bunch of 'Rat Senators.

Well, Romney is NOT going to win, and the only question remains is whether Obama will trounce him enough to call the margin of victory a “mandate.” Voters, dim as they often can be, know something is amiss in this country, but aren`t sold on the idea Romney`s is the right medicine. So, without a clear understanding of why Romney`s the better choice, they`re going to stay with the devil they know... especially one who gives them “free” stuff.
Romney generates no excitement beyond “ABO,” and very rarely are elections won based simply on getting the incumbent out of office. It was an ingredient in what brought the defeat of Jimmy Carter, but his approval ratings were in the mid-30% range and he faced Reagan. Obama`s at last count, are at an RCP average of 48.9%. Further, he starts at an electoral vote base of around 250, and is facing an astonishingly weak opponent in Romney.
With the impending defeat of the GOP nominee, why is now not as good a time as ever to regroup and re-shape the political landscape by consolidating the conservative movement into another entity?
The marriage with the GOPe is clearly over, so what exactly does clinging to that relationship accomplish? Oh, that`s right.. we`re doing it “for the kids,” aren`t we?

The last line is, of course, wrong. Here in Ohio, Goode’s name will be on the ballot. When I select “Goode” a vote will be registered for Goode. It will not be counted for any other candidate.
It would be vote fraud for the precinct or the elections system to count that vote for anyone other than Goode.
We have discussed vote fraud at length on Free Republic, and everyone is agreed that a vote for a candidate should be counted for that candidate and not for anyone else. There is unanimity as well that dead people, illegals, and repeat voters should all be much better controlled.
So, I guarantee you about the facts: a vote for Goode is a vote for Goode.
But, perhaps you aren’t talking about facts.
If we’re talking about interpreting voting patterns, then my interpretation is that I’m voting for a future conservative party to get established since it has to get started somewhere and sometime.
As for Obama, I’m not one of those running around thinking he’s the anti-Christ or some other such nonsense.

Ain’t gonna happen, but he does seem to be a good man and what we need. Perhaps, if we survive this next election, and the few after it, we might get on a true conservative track. I can’t hold my breath that long, but I will remain hopeful with you.
