Coffee drinking linked to longer life

Drinking a daily cup of coffee -- or even several cups -- isn't likely to harm your health, and it may even lower your risk of dying from chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests.

NIH followed 400,000 men and women for 13 years, during which 13% died.

In the study, both regular and decaf were associated with a lower risk of dying

Overall, coffee drinkers were less likely than their peers to die during the study, and the more coffee they drank, the lower their mortality risk tended to be. Compared with people who drank no coffee at all, men and women who drank six or more cups per day were 10% and 15% less likely, respectively, to die during the study.

Coffee contains some 1,000 compounds, many of which are health-promoting antioxidants, Freedman says.

"There's some data showing that some of these components may prevent insulin resistance and have a role in diabetes," he says.

I always loved coffee ice cream and coffee milk (eclipse syrup-yum)

I love to take a tablespoon of coffee left over from morning's breakfast (it drains off from the drip unit) and have it that evening in a glass of whole milk.

I drink 6 to 8 cups of coffee a day......I’m going to live to 100 if I don’t die from lack of sleep first....

I get REAL grumpy if I don’t get my Java fix....

I remember when it was bad for you. I rarely drink it in the afternoon or night anymore, sometimes decaf with a desert. I do drink 2 to 4 cups in the morning, black no sugar, but I don’t like it strong or old.

The Doc put my office mate on a caffeine free existence a couple of weeks ago. Poor guy has to watch me guzzle joe all day.

My grandparents lived to mid to late 90’s age on such a diet you described. Real food, less preservatives an were hard working active people.

Good genetics an less FDA etc...

My opinion ... Stay Safe.

I’m another one who can’t stand coffee - I don’t particularly care for the greasy taste and it gives me a tummy ache if I drink more than one cup. OTOH, I drink up to 8 cups of hot tea a day (plain ole’ Lipton) and have for some 40 years and never a tummy problem with tea. Go figure.

I agree with you Sam, a good cup of coffee is one of the best things God ever invented. My dad was a huge coffee drinker and we had many a great conversation over a cup of coffee. Gosh I miss those days. All my dad wanted during the last 3 days of his life was coffee with a little cream and sugar. That was the last thing he was served the day before he passed. I know I will be the same way.

I would make the second one then. I have tried it many different ways over the years but cannot stand the taste of any of it. If it tasted as good as it smelled, I would drink it heavily.

On the other hand, I love milk and like hot chocolate.

I hope this is true. I have drank enough coffee in my life time to float a battleship.

I know loads of people who ‘hate’ coffee but love coffee ice cream

I'm one of those who love both! And I'll gladly participate in your study on coffee ice cream. :-)

Maybe that was the secret of how, in the Book of Genesis, so many of the patriarchs lived hundreds and hundreds of years. They drank lots of coffee!

If that’s the case, I’ll be joining the other heavily caffeinated FReepers here in a special thread to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Obama’s defeat in 2112. And of course some joker will post the latest photo of Helen Thomas in it.
