House Burglaries Baffle Staff, Police (House of Representatives)
National Journal ^ | 5/17/12 | Julia Edwards

Puzzling break-ins over the last month at the offices of at least three House members and several committees have U.S. Capitol Police gumshoes working to find a pattern and the culprits, with missing items ranging from cash and expensive computer equipment to autographed baseballs and alcohol.

In at least four of the cases, thieves broke into the offices at night when doors were locked, leading some staffers to believe they were victims of an inside job.

(MAP: Where the House Office Break-Ins Happened)

“The evidence points to someone with access to my office, and other offices in the Capitol complex, as the perpetrator,” freshman Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., surmised in a letter to the House’s Office of the Chief Administrative Officer.

Other offices hit—many of which handle information dealing with issues of national security, though nothing of a sensitive nature was reportedly taken—include those of Reps. Jerry Lewis, R-Calif., and Jon Runyan, R-N.J.; the Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security; and the Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Some years ago, I read a great book by a former KGB agent about his life as a spy in Washington.

These were a few observations which stick with me after reading that book:

  1. The ruling class in DC lives in its own little bubble without much concern for security except as it relates to their political careers.
  2. The class which cleans their offices, serves their meals and drives their taxicabs is increasingly made up of third worlders. While most have just moved to the DC area to make money, many of them can be recruited by spies for a pittance to provide information as easy as delivering trash bags filled with discarded technical drawings from an intelligence agency.
  3. Our own media stationed in DC are also primary sources for this type of intelligence and, indeed, to recruit third worlders to do this work. One of key sources for this KGB guy was a press woman who knew key left wing organizations who could reach out to these foreign nationals.
  4. One of the key things which the KGB spymasters learned from this trash can intelligence was that military equipment designs which we threw in our trash cans was more advanced than what the Russians could even do. Eight years of the Reagan administration had really taken its toll on Russia and had widened the gap. The 1988 election was seen as the point of no return. If Russia could not change the direction of the United States politically, they would have no hope to catch up militarily or even avoid financial insolvency.

We all know what happened after that. The KGB agent used the friends he made in the American media to immigrate and eventually write a book which would have blown the whistle on them. That is, if anybody had bothered to read it.

There must be cameras, which means whoever did it turned them off. This reeks of donks.

“Call me paranoid, but does anyone else notice a pattern in the victims here? Who’s to say their offices aren’t being broken into to gain intel, and then some items are taken to make it look like simple theft?”

or plant some bugs or evidence, OR, a good way to get rid
of bugs or incriminating evidence.

OK, a few bottles of scotch and somebody’s signed baseball is one thing (errr, two things). Computers are a whole different colored horse.

How the heck do you just waltz in and out of the Capitol without being under some scrutiny? There is something really smelly going on here and I predict we will never hear how it is cleared up. If it is, that is.

This will all be forgotten in a month.
