Fifty-six percent of of Americans say President Barack Obama will win re-election, the Gallup polling organization said Tuesday, drily calling that prediction "perhaps a slightly more optimistic assessment than is currently warranted."
Thirty-six percent say presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney will be the one taking the oath of office in January.
Party affiliation shapes whether Americans are bullish or bearish on the odds of another term for Obama: 81 percent of Democrats but just 24 percent of Republicans predict he'll pull it off. But 58 percent of Independents agreed, compared to just 31 percent who said Romney would get the keys to the White House.
Gallup's latest daily tracking poll found the incumbent and the challenger in a dead heat, with Obama up a statistically meaningless 46 percent to 45 percent over Romney.
"It may be that Americans recognize the advantages Obama has as the incumbent and that historically, presidents seeking re-election usually win," according to Gallup's analysis.

Now that’s funny as it gets.
Guilty.. They didn’t call me. But I would have told um he would likely win.
You can’t beat a socialist democrat with a socialist rino.
How do we know that's "optimistic?"
And even more predict that the world will end in December of 2012 because they read a twitter post on facebook based on something the Mayans once said.
I’m looking forward to that $10 a gallon pump bill. But at least it’s saving the planet...
Yea this is spin, spin, spin bigtime.
I guess this is a favor to that horrible NYT poll that came out today
Bill Clinton was the first Democrat to be twice-elected to the White House since Harry Truman.
Obama is going down like Jimmy Carter.
No internals published. Utter trash.

That makes me sick to my stomach.
A ham sandwich would beat Obama in November.
The economy is not going to get better by November no matter how much smoke the government throws around trying to obscure things. It is much more likely to get substantially worse.
Americans can be counted on to vote their pocket book. They always have.
I can say that 3 times
How many folks did they make contact, all 5 in the old phone booth?
Whenever a bad poll comes out against Obama notice how a supposed “Good” poll comes out in his favor. Give me a break Obama is gonna lose in a landslide my two poochies could beat Obama in a debate
Going all out for 1% of the population isn’t exactly a winning strategy for Obama, especially since they were already going to vote for him anyway.
They’re assuming there will be elections.
“And even more predict that the world will end in December of 2012 because they read a twitter post on facebook based on something the Mayans once said.”
If Obama wins in November, we better all hope the Mayan Calender is correct!
Paddy Power has the odds of 0bama winning at 1 to 2. Romney is at 13 to 8. I trust the gamblers more than most of the polls.
See #15.
Obama is flailing about because he can’t run his record. The gay thing, the tax the rich thing and the Republican “assault” on women thing are all out of desperation. They all avoid the elephant in the room - the economy.
Agreed. See #23.
I hope you're right. Carter and Bush 41 were the only Presidents I've lived under who served one term. I was born under the last year of Carter, and up to the present, most Presidents have served 2 terms (warranted or not).
I pray that now as an adult, I'll see and understand the pertinence of voting out a bad President. I don't have a measuring stick, but this one seems like the absolute worst.
"perhaps a slightly more pessimistic assessment than is currently warranted..."
Maybe people are factoring in the benefit Obama will get from having a friendly company involved in counting the votes. Or his ability as President to create an "October surprise."
Yea, riiiiiight.
And Obama wrote his books, too.
They probably polled a bunch of fifth graders and stay-at-home welfare slugs. IOW, likely voters.
/snarkasm
People who hang out at Yahoo News will believe anything.
Brain dead supporters cannot/will not see what he has done to this country.
Blacks and Hispanics would continue to support him if he lined some up on the White House lawn every day and shot them. Never before in history has there been such blind adoration.
The MSM continues to lie for him and cover up for him.
There will be massive voter fraud and illegal contributions in this election just as there was in 2008.
If anyone thinks they will give up the commie coup they pulled off without an epic battle, they are sadly mistaken.
This will be the dirtiest, hardest fought election in history.
Folks, the Obama Media and spin masters for Obama have led the American public to believe that Obama was unbeatable, so many who oppose Obama have said, we can’t stand the guy, but...he will win. Not so.......the house of Obama cards is faling into little pieces with each passing day. And....the Obamabots thought Romney was going to be a pushover as McCain, the weak sister was.
Shucks Romney is not even the Pubbie candidate yet, and has not picked a VP running mate, and.....he is besting Obama before the Romney Campaign even gets into gear. Obama is toast. Bank on it!!!
What we really need to know is the kids survey for that school magazine and the result of the Redskins game the weekend before the election.
Obama can’t win, his cheekbones are too low.
Oh, brother..
Well the latest MSNBC/HookAHottie.com poll shows that Obama has already won the 2012 election and is favored to win the 2016 election as well.
I’m hearing more people say that and I believe it’s possible there will be none.
The last time 3 presidents in a row were re-elected, it was Jefferson, Madison, Monroe. Obama is on the wrong side of history.
When Mc’Cain got the Republican nomination I predicted Obama would be a one time president, and I’m sticking to that prediction.
“Americans can be counted on to vote their pocket book. They always have.”
I agree; whatever Obama thinks he’ll gain with student loans appealing to one groups pocketbooks will fall flat with a much larger group who won’t benefit from it (but will be expected to subsidize it). I’d love to see the mood at any of the commencement speeches Obama is giving this year...
Just because people think he is going to win (steal) the election doesn’t mean they think it is a good thing or that they want him to win.
Like I saw on another thread if Satan himself were running against Obama, most Americans would have to flip a coin to decide who to vote for.
If the election is counted half way fairly, Obambi is going to lose badly.
Tell that to George H.W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Lyndon Johnson, Harry Truman, Herbert Hoover, William Taft, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, James Buchanan, Franklin Pierce, Millard Fillmore, John Tyler, Martin Van Buren, John Quincy Adams and John Adams. (That's 16 Presidents who failed to win a term that they ran for as President.)
Compare that to George W. Bush, William Clinton, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, Dwight Eisenhower, Franklin Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, William McKinley, Ulysses Grant, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, James Monroe, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington. (That's 17 Presidents who were re-elected.)
So technically that's a true statement. 51.5% of the time a President who runs for re-election is re-elected. But that statistic is cold comfort for a Whitehouse looking at these polls.
Truman was elected once.

"Once!"
Obama is the incumbent and, obviously, has the most name recognition. Most “adults” are not into the election process...yet. So the easiest answer to give to “Who will win the election” is “Obama” since he’s the best known. This survey is useless.
Yes, my eyes crossed coming across that one too. Curious, that term “optimistic”.
Great post! Thanks!
Is that a win because he is declared president, or is that a win because flesh and blood people vote for him.
Because that is two entirely unrelated subjects.
