Obama: Same-Sex Marriage Rights Would 'Strengthen Families'

By Kathleen Hennessey May 14, 2012

Extending marriage rights to gays and lesbians would "strengthen families," President Obama told a group of donors at a New York fundraiser on Monday.

Speaking at a glitzy event attended by actress Eva Longoria and after an introduction by Ricky Martin, Obama added his recently revealed views on same-sex marriage to his typical stump speech.

Obama said he believes all people are "equal in terms of dignity and in terms of respect."

"I want everyone treated fairly in this country," Obama told donors gathered at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City. "We have never gone wrong when we've extended rights and responsibilities to everybody. That doesn't weaken families; that strengthens families."

Even after announcing his support of gay marriage last week, the president had made only passing references to his new position at campaign events -- in line with remarks made before the public reversal about equality.

Despite the attention to the announcement, the president doesn't appear to be prepping to mount a campaign to push Congress to act on the issue. The Justice Department has dropped its legal defense of the Defense of Marriage Act, the federal law defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman, and Obama has said he supports legislation to repeal the law.

The next move is Congress', Obama said earlier in the day on ABC's "The View."

We have never gone wrong when we've extended rights and responsibilities . . .

I recall a little experiment with lowering the drinking age to 18 . . .

I see.
But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. / For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, / And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Obama said he believes all people are "equal in terms of dignity and in terms of respect."

Great, we can all search, hope, and pray equally for a "pot to pi$$ in" under his reign.

all people are "equal in terms of dignity and in terms of respect."

In his mind a whore and a nun have the same dignity and deserve the same respect?

Never mind....I already know the answer.

Well this is just Big News for FAMILIES!

With official gay marriage the limited pie of spousal and dependent benefits will be served in smaller slices to both gay marriage parties and families with children.

This is a natural family strengthener!

The Dems playing this gay marriage thing like a drum to cover-up for their failure in regards to the economy.

Yes...the OWS is next. When that doesn’t work O will rev up the race wars. Look at California. Going to cut those “services” soon.

Obama said he believes all people are “equal in terms of dignity and in terms of respect.”***********

I assume this dignity and respect doesn’t apply to those whose very existence would be guaranteed under the Born Alive Infant Protection Act.

How does redefining marriage to include same sex marriage, which will in time open up marriage to any combination of consenting adults, strengthen marriage?

Legalizing same sex marriage will strengthen families in the same proportion as Obama’s same outcome, i.s. spread the wealth, socialism has strengthened the economy.

Nature did not intend two men or two women to raise children because two men together or two women together cannot naturally produce a child which creates a family. What part of the equation is lost in translation?
