From Nuremberg to Guantanamo

In 2008, the mastermind of 9/11, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and his four co-defendants said they wanted to plead guilty and requested to be executed. They bragged about killing 2,976 people at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania, so the only question now is whether the world will get a trial that accomplishes enough to justify delaying their wish to be executed.

The first step toward a trial began earlier this month at a chaotic arraignment by the military commission in Guantanamo Bay. Those who hoped these proceedings would remind the world of the deeds and character of the terrorists got their wish—though not in the way the legal system intended.

The arraignment process, which usually takes a few minutes, became a 13-hour drama. One defendant refused to attend, so he was restrained and carried in on a chair. All the defendants refused headsets, so the judge used loudspeakers to ensure they heard the Arabic translation of the capital charges against them for murder and hijacking. Another defendant repeatedly disrupted the proceedings by kneeling to pray, even though there were three scheduled prayer breaks. Another crafted a paper airplane.

,(a lawyer) (the lawyer) for one of the defendants, wore a black hijab and abaya, covering all but her face, hands and feet. She demanded that female prosecutors cover themselves too, "so that our clients are not forced to look at the prosecution for fear of committing a sin under their faith."

This absurdity is in line with years of legalistic debate, from carping about military tribunals to demanding Miranda rights for terrorists detained on the battlefield. It's time to find a higher purpose for this trial.

As the man said...'you can't make this stuff up" It is hard for the Cheryl Bormann's of today's legal world to understand true l-a-w when our law schools teach only s-o-c-i-a-l- j-u-s-t-i-c-e. Ms. Bormann may one day be in need of justice to save her life or the life of someone she loves. It will indeed be a cold day in hell as there will likely be precious few courts with judges who understand true justice and law. Three prayer breaks? Fear of committing SIN under their faith?

All Americans have a shared responsibility not to let their country be destroyed by the lunatics on the left.

Even FDR, who fundamentally transformed the US for the worse, let it be known the German saboteurs should get a fair trial, then get dead in about a month.

Agree. I’d have killed them all as soon as we’d tortured all the information we could out of them. Not a day later. This delay of years is absurd. So is a trial if they want to plead guilty. That should take 5 minutes.
