A day after Mitt Romney said he was fine with gay adoption, he took it back. Suddenly, its not fine.
He said on Thursday: And if two people of the same gender want to live together, want to have a loving relationship, or even to adopt a child in my state, individuals of the same sex were able to adopt children. In my view, thats something that people have a right to do. But to call that marriage is something that, in my view, is a departure from the real meaning of that word.
On Friday,he was asked, in an interview with CBS affiliate WBTV in Charlotte, N.C., how his opposition to gay marriage squared with his support for gay adoptions. Romney told anchor Paul Cameron, Well, actually I think all states but one allow gay adoption,

This is the most gayest day ever here on FR...lol I counted 89 articles today with gay in the headline
Nobody really knows anything about Romney’s internal beliefs or convictions, or even why he is in politics, do they?
He is just words and motion moving toward another personal accomplishment of some type.
Well, bully for him.
Isn’t this the same man who as Chief Executive of Massachuesetts forced every community to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples?
He was for it before he was against it...hmmm..where did I hear that before?
He doesn’t appear to have any convictions.
Next week Obama will find another tune for Romney to dance to.
Romney is a reed that blows in the wind.
He is a poor candidate, but the only one we have right now.
It’s going to be rough voting for this poor little rich kid.
Fodder for Hill and Bill to reappear.
All this conservative stuff gets confusing for Romney.
“or even why he is in politics, do they?”
You almost get the impression he wants to be president sort of like getting another mansion. Bragging rights.
Read the article, it really does not qualify as a flip flop. He softened his statement a bit but he didn’t oppose gay adoption. Of course most of us here would want him to flip flop on this but he didn’t really.
I held my nose and voted for McCain. I didn’t believe anything he said, but he was predictable. I didn’t need to know what he said because I could anticipate what he would do. With Romney I haven’t a clue. I will not vote for him.
He really does need a 24 hour rule.
“No more than one flip or flop in any 24 hour period.”
How could you possibly identify a homosexual baby? And even if you did, why would you care what Romney thought about adopting it?
I cannot remember any significant GOP politician who had so much homosexual drama surrounding his life.
I cannot remember any significant GOP politician who had so much homosexual drama surrounding his life.
“All this conservative stuff gets confusing for Romney.”
Severely.
Romney always reminds me of a scene from ‘Pretty Woman’ when Julia Roberts’ character is asked “What’s your name?” and she replies ‘What do you want it to be?”
A gay man adopting a young boy.....that always ends well.
Oh, God, why did we get stuck with this man?
No flip-flop, but a real major contradiction, perhaps?
So Romney comes out in opposition to gay marriage, but does not oppose gay adoption, and that’s not supposed to raise eyebrows with the evangelicals?
Guess not with the “leadership” that endorses him; with the vast majority of Christian voters it may be problematic.
“ROMNEY FLIP-FLOPS ON GAY ADOPTION”
Give him a break...evolving ain’t easy.
To the headline: not a big surprise, Romney takes at least five positions on every issue.
That’s not the flip flop though, the flip flop was he seemed to say people have a right to gay adoption, now he backed away from that.
Really think the lesson is don’t get sidetracked with this stuff, stick with the economy.
He didn’t flip flop - he evolved!
You’re a Ron Paul booster, declared so much back in January. Why not be honest about your intentions when you joined back then? It’s okay to support Paul, but to be sorta sneaky about Romney stinks. You weren’t even a Cain or Newt supporter.
Well what’s new?
Romney doesn’t have an honest bone in his body.
He is the ultimate Used-Car Salesman and will say whatever he thinks you want to hear.
Judging by his record as Governor of Massachusetts where he implemented the following:
1. Gay Marriage
2. Carbon Cap-and-Trade system
3. “Assault” Weapons ban
4. Socialized Medicine
5. Raised taxes/fees by $700 million dollars
His core convictions are Progressive Liberal.
But as Ann Romney will attest and has stated publically, he will argue any side of the position and you’d think he really believes in that position, but he doesn’t.
I've read on Free Republic (don't recall the poster) that Romney has “daddy issues” and needs to become president so pops will be proud of him.
I thought his dad was dead.
Even if he is dead, maybe Romney and his “issues” propel him to get the presidency because presidency trumps governor.
Just sayin’...
In August 2003, he said he favored “adoptive parent rights” for gay couples. This was in the Lawrence Eagle (MA newspaper).
Then there is this:
http://www.glad.org/uploads/docs/news/globe-catholic-charities-stuns-state.pdf
but I can find no reference to the MA state law “requiring” that every adoption agency place kids with gays.
I agree. On one day he’s making statements against it, the next day he’s saying, but it’s already legal almost everywhere, wayagunnadoo?
Yeah, I thought the article failed to support the headline.
You can roll manure in powdered sugar but that don’t make it a jelly doughnut
Wow1 I just re-read your statement a couple of times. As someone who lost their father in the last year and a half, you are way off base, at least in my life.
I wouldn’t “presume” what a dead person would say.
“Really think the lesson is dont get sidetracked with this stuff, stick with the economy.”
Yeah, but there’s no way to do that. The media just won’t let you, and Romney is a compulsive talker and explainer anyway.
Is there any way he can be dragged across the finish line against Obama?
This stuff isn't a sidetrack. It's the main track.
A man IS his character, his values, his morality.
And Romney floats with every wind that blows one way or another.
You think he'll be any different with the economy? Heck no.
Not just Free Republic. It's a national trend and has been all week long. Today (Mother's Day) "gay" is only second to "mom".
It's what Obama and the democrats have been wanting all along. They need to avoid the real issue: The Economy.
Question is: Will his opponent bite? (no pun intended)
Bunch of revelations coming Mitt’s way eh?
Where were these Mormon angels of prophecy years ago when this bishop was clueless? Pardon the cynicality, although if Mitt has to flip it could be worse than to flip in the opposite direction from Barack Obama’s moves. Barack Obama is an example of getting almost everything wrong.
Do you have a link to the 2003 article? Thanks, DBrow
TexasKamaAina,
Native Texan or an Hawaiian transplant?
have not heard that word for awhile.
:)
Not yet. If you search for 2003 “adoptive parent rights” romney , you get articles mentioning it, but not the original. It came from a small newspaper chain that probably does not have deep storage.

“Well, not in so many words. But he has backed these unions just the same. In August 2003, Governor Romney told the editorial board of the Lawrence (MA) Eagle Tribune that although “marriage should be between a man and a woman,” he also believes that “those in domestic partnerships should have medical insurance rights, survivor benefits, child visitation and adoptive parent rights—the same civil rights married couples enjoy.” In other words, the equivalent of marriage.

“ISSUE: Oppose homosexual couples adopting children? Romney: NO. Documentation: As Governor, Romney spoke in favor of adoptive parent rights (2003) and children born to same-sex couples, and adopted by same-sex couples (2005), stated homosexuals have a legitimate interest to adopt children (2006), awarded Parents of the Year recognition to two homosexual men who had adopted a boy (2006), and recently reaffirmed his support for states that permit homosexual adoptions (2011).” [personally I doubt he’s deceiving Americans]
Ahh, Tower?....WTF??...over
Romney should say as little as possible.
We will either lose this election outright, or win it and discover too late that Romney has mental issues.
How CAN a man be a socialist and be on a Republican ticket, and how CAN a man who is a socialit be so damn vacuous???
This guy makes my head explode. We are looking at an air head with hair!
He could be shot out of a dang cannon and land apologizing for bouncing when he hit the ground!
This stuff is no sign of intellegence, accomplishment, depth, gravitas, political savy.
Hells, bells, his wife has to restate nearly his every utterance and she has to amp up her own persona to Mach X, just to have a prayer of being convincing when she stares into the camera saying Myth approaches ANYYHING in the vicinity of normal.
No convictions is right, cc!
Romney is programmed.
“Oh, God, why did we get stuck with this man?”
The same reason we got stuck with Dole and McCain - the GOP does not represent us anymore, if they ever really did. Time to wake up, get out of our comfort zone and take the bull by the horns.
I don’t think hummingbird was having George Romney thinking or speaking, but he is probably right about Mitt.
Mitt was with his father at the 1964 convention where Goldwater accepted and Reagan made his famous speech, when the liberal Governor George Romney made his formal protest against conservatism and stormed off the convention floor.
The liberal George Romney ran against Reagan and Nixon in 1968 as the anti-war candidate for President (while Mitt was staying out of the draft, and the public eye, in France) and suffered a humiliating national embarrassment as he was laughed out of the race for saying that he was “brainwashed” by the American military leadership while touring Vietnam.
Romney switched registration because of Reagan and did not support him, and from 1989 to 1993 when he reregistered republican his only political donations and fundraising was for democrats, Romney voted for Paul Tsongas, Romney hates the right, and has always wanted revenge against us.
Romney was also one of the few Republicans in 1994 to refuse to sign on to Newt Gingrich’s Contract with America.
* “My hope is that, after this election, it will be the moderates of both parties who will control the Senate, not the Jesse Helmses.”
* Look, I was an independent during the time of Reagan/Bush
Im not trying to return to Reagan/Bush.
* We must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern,
There is a force that has always been an obstacle and an enemy to the Romneys, a family who is used to power and adulation within their own community, the force that Romney hates, is us, conservatives, gun owners, Evangelicals, conservative Catholics, conservative Christians of all stripes, all of the various elements that make up the right, and who have blocked his families ambitions for generations.
Yep. And we have FREEPERS who are saying we need to vote for this fraud....no thank you. He is the worst candidate we have had in history. I tried to tell people if we did not get behind “named conservative candidate” that we would be stuck with Romney....obviously everything thought they were smarter and look what happened. Well I hope those people get extra people to go to the polls because I refuse to vote for this disaster. I want no part of it. I haven’t even been on FR lately because of Romney’s nomination....to depressing considering we had many other options. If Romney was the only one to announce that would be one thing, but considering we had a ton of better candidates, they can have it.
You are joining right? We know Romney’s internal beliefs, he is a liberal through and through. He always had been and he always will be.
Obama's Economy thanks us for the distraction.
