Russia's President Vladimir Putin will skip a planned visit to the United States this month for a key global summit and a much-anticipated meeting with President Barack Obama, the Kremlin confirmed Thursday, as he faced pressure from protests and opposition criticism at home.
The White House announced Wednesday that Putin is unable to join the other leaders of the Group of Eight industrial nations meeting outside Washington on May 18-19. The Kremlin said Putin needs to finish work setting up his new government.
Instead, Russia will send Dmitry Medvedev, the former president and new prime minister, to the G8 summit.
The Kremlin said that Obama expressed "understanding" for Putin's cancellation, and the two are now due to meet at another global summit in Mexico in mid-June.

Maybe he caught wind of planned hijinx and wants no part? Going to be interesting to see how this summit plays out. Lately, our leaders have been testing many boundaries and this summit presents a great opportunity to push a few more.
Take, for example, gay marriage. To anyone paying attention it was no secret the president was a supporter. However, instead of coming right out and saying it, he has to ‘evolve’ for some time, then right before opening the can of worms, two administration lackeys conveniently ‘surprisingly’ publicly come out in support. Had that not gone well, no chance the president makes his announcement this soon. Hand forced by the VP - horsemanure, it was a planned roll out.
Same thing coming with this meeting conveniently in Chicago where a certain person is conveniently mayor- it will be a ‘systems test’ for a broader implementation of controls designed to suprees the populace - my opinion. Putin wants no part- he has his own problems that will get worse as the US devolves...
He wanted to give Obama some “space”.

Or maybe he doesn't want to have to deal with recent threats he made, after being told to hold his horses until after the election
