I don’t think it’s right to assume that voters understand what’s going on politically and economically, especially in terms of broad principles. They generally know only how circumstances are affecting them personally, and if things aren’t perceived as going well, they tend to jump from party to party, thinking that if the party in power isn’t fulfilling their expectations, the other one will.

The problem is not new ... wasn’t even new in Kipling’s day. The problem hasn’t gone away.

Good job bringing attention to it.

It does boggle the mind that France and perhaps Germany are turning away from reality. With the secondary economies of the PIGS it is possible to imagine the Portugese, for example, convincing themselves that the larger economies will bail them out, but with the big boys it shows the mental block is systemic.

As this moves forward inflation is certain as they print the paper. The Brits might escape but the others are locked in by the Euro.

Our own country is tied more closely than we realize.

Excellent analysis, as usual. The left has been softening up our population for 100 years, and they have successfully disrupted our country to the point of total failure.

"Perhaps it is because the population of Kipling's time were better educated, and he could afford to be a little obtuse"

. There's a line in "My Fair Lady" where Rex Harrison speak/sings a ditty about "Why Can't The English Learn To Speak" (English) .. (Eliza is SOOO friggin' Cockney) and the line goes;

"Why, in America, they haven't spoken it in years"

I'm often reminded of that line, especially when reading our founders' words.

Shame n' a pity.

Great piece, two observations:

"Cats are genetically wired to behave in ways that humans see as insane."
Which is why they're way-cool to have around.

"The financial systems of most of Europe are in near-collapse and the only thing that might have saved them from ruin was fiscal responsibility. Yet the people voted against it....The Europeans....threw off the shackles of reality, and slipped from under the yoke of truth."
The only thing that might save us is the same, which would require us to kick Obama out - but why is that still not a sure thing?
One would think that Zero's exit would be a foregone conclusion, but....

I’ve said for some time now “there will be blood.” Not just in Europe but here at home (USA).

I don’t think the US can rescue them. First, the US is hardly strong enough to do so. Second, there are too many countries going down the same toilet for one country to rescue them.

I will not be joining in the adulation for this op-piece.

There is no such thing as Europe, not in a sense as a unified economic entity. The unemployment rate in Austria is around 4%. In Spain it’s over 20%. And in Sweden it’s around 8.5%. So where is this Europe that is collapsing? Some countries have serious problems, others are doing well. They all have nationalized health care and government spending at levels far exceeding those in the US. They also have far lower crime rates and higher life expectancy and better overall health statistics. Their economic systems are diverse and so are their problems, no surprise there. I wouldn’t be so blase about calling the people of these countries “crazy”, without understanding their histories and different political and economic systems.

I agree that there is no unified Europe. There is, however, a unified Euro. That is an artifact destined for destruction.

And as to the variance in performance of several European countries, I would remind you of a similar variance (in the 1920's and 1930's), which resulted in a bloody world war.

Those nations who are performing poorly will cause an geocentric destabilizing effect, negatively impacting the nations who are performing better.

I presume you won't disagree with the fact that the solution is inside ourselves, to become a more moral and unselfish people.

The rest will pan out by itself and we will see how accurate I am.
