Romney needs to get small donors hooked / Weak passion seen for candidate

Wow, look at those enthusiastic faces surrounding Romney!

In outspending former Sen. Rick Santorum and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich en route to the Republican presidential nomination, Mitt Romney proved he knows how to reel in big-cash backers. But if he hopes to go toe-to-toe this fall with President Obama, the former Massachusetts governor needs to show he can fish for small-dollar donors, too.

“Now that the race [is] a two-person contest, Mr. Romney ought to be able to bring more small donors in,” said Michael J. Malbin, executive director of the Campaign Finance Institute (CFI), a Washington-based think tank. “But to do so, some things will have to change. He will have to gain more passionate support or more committed support as opposed to respect. He will have to make a real effort to find these people and go after them. This campaign at several points has said that it was doing so, but we do not see much evidence of that.”

Even if Mr. Romney goes after smaller fish, it’s not clear the GOP rank and file are eager to hop into the presumptive nominee’s net.

“Not unless I’m struck by a lightning bolt from on high,” said Emma P. Routh from Franklinville, N.C., who fired off a $100 check to Mr. Santorum in March, weeks before the former senator from Pennsylvania dropped out of the race. She said it might take divine intervention to get her to send a similar check to Mr. Romney.

If obamney wants to WIN, he needs the Palin/Santorum/West types to get him some passioniate voters.

There's no way to "get" us. Myth is a liberal. No mere endorsement is enough to sway my vote. View my profile to see why I'm not voting for Romney.

I'm spending my hard-earned money to help conservative candidates win Congress. I'm either leaving the presidential part of the ballot blank, or writing in my candidate of choice -- not sure who yet.

But to win and rouse any enthusiasm, he needs to make clear that this Country cannot survive another four years of the kenyan commie usurper!

"Look alive, you stinking conservatives! You'd better show some enthusiasm for Romney, or it's another four years of the kenyan commie usurper!" [cracks whip]

Go to a Ron Paul meeting before you decide. If social issues tweek your passion, this guy is the democrat party in full drag. Paul is a democrat if you look only at social issues, and the only way he scores on conservative issues is going to all the Gun Shows, Fiscal and money policy. Of course, he wants to steal the nomination. How does this make Paul better than Romeny other than neither is Obama. People will vote for Romeny due to his past 20-years of organizing for the Presidency.

I totally agree.. Romney is going to have his a** handed to him in November. The sad part is... this was once winnable. Too bad the GOP-e opted for what they hope will be gracious defeat, rather than go for the win.

But then, why would anyone expect anything different from that party?

You absolutely CANNOT win or rouse ANY enthusiasm out of a fear-mongering campaign that says "Vote for me or else we all die!". You will not get passion, you will not get enthusiasm to crawl over broken glass to vote for a turd who is on record, the same as the guy we are told to fear another 4 years from.

Not going to happen because enthusiasm cannot be won that way, plain and hard fact.

Between Romney and Obama, it's not a choice, it's a trap.

I think that you are misreading Texasfreeper2009's post. He's not supporting Ron Paul. He's voting for him to keep Mitt Romney from the nomination, even if it's a long shot.

ANYTHING WHICH KEEPS MITT ROMNEY FROM GETTING THE REPUBLICAN NOMINATION IS A GOOD THING!!! Yes, even voting for the crazy uncle.

"You are all condemned men. We keep you alive to serve Romney. So donate well and live."

If I have any money for politics this fall, it will go to Congressional candidates, especially senate candidates. We need conservatives in Congress to counter either presidential candidate.

Not going to happen. His big money backers want him to represent them, fine, then they can pay for him.

This sounds like the Republican version of the Warren Buffett tax. A billionaire who demands that billionaires pay more in taxes, while evading the taxes he already owes.

In this case, the onerous Romney’s only pitch to conservatives is that they have no choice but to vote for him, even though he utterly disdains both their beliefs and them personally.

It is an excellent political rule of thumb that voters will vote against somebody they intensely dislike, like Obama, but they will not *pay* to support someone they still intensely dislike, just *less*, like the onerous Romney.

Right now, the only way that the onerous Romney will win is if he shuts his mouth. If he offends conservatives any more than he has already done, it will not earn him any money, but they may decide to not vote for any presidential candidate at all, just for conservatives in the House and Senate, hoping that they will at least neuter whoever is elected.

This does raise the issue that the office of the presidency is too powerful, right now, and needs to be taken down a bunch of pegs, that it once again become “co-equal” with the congress and the Supreme Court.

I have a gut feeling history is about to repeat itself, and it is not going to be like 2008. Obama could very well be “one and done” using the college March madness phase.

I'd really like to agree Obama's in trouble, but other than peoples' gut feelings and anecdotal statements, there's no real evidence showing Obama will lose. That RCP electoral vote map (253-170 advantage for Obama) is conservative measure, not including swing states showing Obama with comfortable leads.

Why would there be any passion for a lying, left-wing, Progressive Liberal who spent millions lying about his opponents in the primaries?

All he did was depress turn-out for himself in the general election with those types of treacherous tactics.

But we will see.

The pocketbook and the wallet issues still hold sway at Presidential election time.

Does he do that trick where he pulls the cloth through his hand and it changes from "I AM A CELTIC" to "I AM A LAKER" to "I AM A 76ER" to...?

It's a new technology from the Ohio Art company, Etch-A-Sketch cloth. Just give it a shake and it becomes whatever team you're attending.

Weak passion seen for candidate

No kidding? I can't imagine why.

/sarc

Let's face it - given the almost complete overlap between the two candidates, Romney's natural base is already taken by Obama. All Romney has left is to try to desperately try to convince a bunch of people who don't really like or agree with him that the tiny, tiny little minutiae of differences between him and Obama are really some huge, vast gulf. The going will be rough and uphill for him on that score.

Big donors wanted him, big donors can get him across the finish line.

Me, I don’t want him. Viscerally.
