Global warming deniers mount ad campaign calculated to outrage (and it's working!)
Los Angeles Times ^ | May 4, 2012 | Dan Turner

Posted on 05/06/2012 7:36:50 PM PDT by Zakeet

It has finally happened: The Heartland Institute, an anti-science front group that used to focus on downplaying the dangers of smoking on behalf of Phillip Morris but now spends much of its time denying the scientific consensus on climate change, has decided to stop even trying to be credible in order to attract publicity. In the vernacular: It has gone all PETA on us.

"I still believe in global warming. Do you?" reads a caption written in bright red on a billboard recently mounted in Chicago by the Heartland folks, next to a wild-eyed mugshot of Unabomber Ted Kaczynski. The implication: Only mad bombers would accept the proven fact that global average temperatures are rising. Heartland says this is only the first in a series of similar billboards featuring such renowned tyrants and killers as Charles Manson, Fidel Castro, Osama bin Laden and the lesser-known James J. Lee, a radical environmentalist shot by police after taking hostages at the Discovery Channel's Washington headquarters in 2010.

It hardly takes genius to figure out why these billboards are bizarre and absurd, but I'll spell it out anyway for clarity's sake: This would be like mounting a picture of Adolf Hitler with the words, "I was a Christian. Are you?" or a picture of Blackbeard with the slogan, "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. Do you?" Kaczynski's acceptance that the world is getting warmer no more tarnishes the theory of climate change -- which isn't a "belief," but a well-established scientific theory accepted by virtually every credible expert in the field, despite contradictory theories put forward by non-climatologists and published in the sort of junk-science journal favored by Heartland -- than Hitler's alleged embrace of Darwinism, if true, would tarnish the theory of evolution.

Oh, no doubt about it!

You know, for the LA Slimes to take time to express outrage over this tells me they know it's effective. I truly believe more and more people know AGW is utter and complete B.S.!

It’s what happens when you appeal to “a consensus” in scientific argumentation.

Al needs to stick with what he knows, which consists of eating endangered seafood and fornicating with other men’s wives. Oh, and his carbon credits scam, he should continue doing that, because it’ll increase the amount of prison time he’ll have to do. Thanks Zakeet.

....denying the scientific consensus on climate change,..

"Let's be clear: the work of science has nothing
whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business
of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires
only one investigator who happens to be right, which means
that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world.
In science consensus is irrelevant.
What is relevant is reproducible results.
The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus." -- Michael Crichton

I guess the many thousands of scientists from various disciplines who don't drink the AGW kool-aid didn't get the consensus memo.

Something tells me if physicians and scientists came to a consensus that life begins at conception, these same folks would cry foul.

I truly believe we're winning this argument. I love when our side pulls Alinsky type tactics on these Statists. ;-)

From the article, “which isn’t a “belief,” but a well-established scientific theory ...”

And from the Scientific Method, that which is established is fact, that which is believed is theory.

Classic lib editorial. No substance, just a lot of character assassination and judgmental claptrap. You can get about two sentences into one of these things and spot the bias, and you can be pretty sure that the author is so self-righteously smug that he’s completely unaware that everything he writes has a flashing sign that reads “Lib Loon” superimposed over it.

Hmmm, maybe I missed it, but did this “objective” article happen to mention the cooked climate data from Prof. Michael Mann, and the other stooges at East Anglia in Britain? Probably not, wouldn't want to put a negative light on all of this “consensus.”

I think the author of this article means “bluebeard” not blackbeard. As I recall blackbeard was a pirate and bluebeard was a philanderer.

Please correct me if I am wrong.
