Attorney in hijab defends call for other women at 9/11 hearing to wear 'appropriate' clothing

The defense attorney who wore a traditional Islamic outfit during the rowdy arraignment of the accused Sept. 11 terrorists is defending her courtroom appeal that other women in the room wear more "appropriate" clothing to the proceedings -- out of respect for her client's Muslim beliefs.

Cheryl Bormann, counsel for defendant Walid bin Attash, attended the arraignment Saturday dressed in a hijab, apparently because her client insisted on it. She further requested that the court order other women to follow that example so that the defendants do not have to avert their eyes "for fear of committing a sin under their faith."

At a press conference Sunday at Guantanamo Bay, Bormann said she dresses in a hijab at "all times" when she meets with her client "out of respect" for his beliefs. Asked why she requested other women do the same, Bormann said, "When you're on trial for your life, you need to be focused."

Bormann, who is not Muslim, claimed the issue came up several years ago, when a paralegal wore "very short skirts" and it became a distraction for the defendants. She said that on Saturday, "somebody" was also dressed "in a way that was not in keeping with my client's religious beliefs."

Let's be "sensitive" to psychopathic killers. Heck, why don't all attorneys who deal with Charles Manson get a Pentagram between their eyes?

Lunacy does not begin to describe this.

I won’t be surprised if the court orders all women to dress as muslims for fear of a mistrial or the ruling being overturned on religious grounds. We’re doomed.

It is people like this, and stories like this that make me think maybe the Matrix movies were not fiction.

Nobody can be that ignorant. Well, maybe an attorney but not real people. This scum attorney is just poking us in the eye hoping for some reaction. I’d love to.

I’d bring in a bunch of scantily dressed street walkers and pass out some pulled pork sandwiches wrapped in paper torn from the Koran. It would be fun to watch the so easily offended go ballistic.

Why do we put up with this chit from Muslims? Tell them all to go and eff a goat. Better yet, release some piglets into the defendants seating area.

Why don’t we just shoot them all “while escaping” and be done with it?

Well, she offends me.

I'm middle-aged and conservative. I am in favor of women dressing professionally and modestly. That being said, the "client" should have no say in how women dress around him, and his "sensibilities" should not be considered. If seeing women's hair, or legs, or whatever, offends him, let him go blindfolded.

That is exactly what she should have suggested to him, rather than give in to his insistence that she wear a hijab in his presence.

Furthermore, does anyone think that she would dress like an Amish woman if her client were an Amish man? Would she dress like an Orthodox Jewish woman if her client were an Orthodox Jew? How would she have reacted if her client were a fundamentalist Pentecostal Christian who believes women should grow their hair long and wear it up, wear no makeup, wear dresses, and wear no jewelry? Would she agree to dress that way, and insist other women in the courtroom follow suit? (Actually, can you imagine how outraged she'd probably be at the very suggestion?)

Mushbrain. If I were in the courtroom I'd wear red every day, just to make sure her client could see me and see I was not dressed according to his dictates.

I don’t believe the judge would look kindly upon everyone wearing homicide vests out of respect for the defendants’ religion.
