I'll Have Another wins 138th Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Reddam Racing's I'll Have Another provided a 15-1 upset of Kentucky Derby 138 on Saturday when running down pacesetter Bodemeister before a record crowd of 165,307 to score on the wire at Churchill Downs.

The Doug O'Neill trainee provided jockey Mario Gutierrez with his first Derby winner in his first try when finishing 1 1/4 miles on the fast main track in 2:01 4/5.

Bodemeister ran pretty easy the whole way. He didn’t seem to be really trying so much. Unfortunately, when it came time to sprint, the jockey couldn’t get it out of him. You saw early how hard Trinniberg was running just to keep pace with Bodemeister.

I liked Dullahan myself and I think in a less crowded field he would have won. He’s a hell of a sprinter.

I have been to the Derby a few times, and even visited
Secretariat at his stall (I recently saw the movie on TV), and race horses breeding, all back in my younger playboy days.
I have not seen a derby, even on TV, in over ten years.
Now it is all water over the dam, as I spend twilight on my beach.

Steffi’s hat was an abomination as was one of the reporterette’s who was wearing a black and white monstrosity!
Then there was that gal wearing a WAY TOO BIG red hat that was basically a saucer on her head. No thought to coordination with the outfit other than color.<p.
Mrs p6 was going off the deep end looking at them, LOL!

I’ll second that. Now, if anyone can explain to me what, exactly, is the point of forcing a bunch of horses to run around a track, thats something I’d be interested in hearing.

As a kid I was at the Derby and ran into Howard Cosell. He was wearing a pink tuxedo.

Bodemeister was trying to the wire to wire but if you watch the "I'll Have Another" jockey was pulling him up until they made the last turn. I saw a couple of horses that could have done much better but they got tangled up in traffic.

It's a milestone of the year, a marker on our lives. You can pass them by and not notice or care, but they are still there.

The ice broke a couple of weeks ago on the Tenana river in Nenana Alaska. The Nenana Ice Classic draws interest from around the world. One guy won over a quarter of a million bucks. Last year there were 22 winners. Who cares?

The money isn't important. When the ice breaks there you know the Bad of the Year is gone. That is what is important.

So are the fire festivals in northern Europe, Burn's Night, Daytona, The Masters, The Triple Crown, Indy ...on and on and on.

Don't spoil it for those of us who do mark the passing of the milestones.

Unless you live in W PA and follow harness racing, especially at The Meadows. Then bet on the jockey, the trainer and most importantly who is having a bad year, LOL!

The owners seem to take care of each other.

Also NEVER bet on the morning favorite. Go a couple deep or become a place bettor.

Like I would know. I only do it for fun!

Doubtful. Secretariat’s success was as much a product of his enormous heart as anything else. Race horses generally have larger hearts, but his was huge. To match him, a horse would need to have good thoroughbred bloodlines AND an enormous heart.

That was a fun Derby, with a nice story...the horse coming masterfully from behind, was bought for $11,000, trained by a guy laying phone lines on the side to make ends meet, ridden by an unknown minor league jockey from nowhere.

The one with the pink hat and black and white polka dot dress...that was....ummm...oh shoot I can’t recall now...a wife of one of the trainers...owners? Older gal...from that angle it looks bad but from the eye level camera shot I though she looked OK for her age.

Those are all OK, except for the one with the doll and the one with the blue feather and multicolor polka dots.

I know that they are big and flamboyant, but at least they go with the outfits. The ones on the women who were being interviewed on TV were just stupid. One of the women let slip that “they gave me the hat to wear” which shows me that she hadn’t put much thought into it.
