SEARCY, Ark. (AP) -- An Arkansas woman who cashed $1 million lottery ticket may have to give up the winnings to a woman who threw away the ticket after she bought it.

A judge ruled Tuesday that Sharon Duncan is entitled to the prize money, not Sharon Jones, who claimed the prize money after she took it from a trash can of discarded lottery tickets at a convenience store in Beebe.

Stupid judge...split it....

Say what? Split it between the finder and her attorney. The one that threw it away, threw it away. Too effing bad. Sober up before you sort your lotto ticks next time. The claimant is the one who signed the back of the ticket

BS, you hold the ticket, you win the money.

Bingo!

Of course, that notion went away along with the concept of "bearer" bonds. You can thank the War On (some) drugs for that, along with the IRS' desire to find every nickel that is or might be due to the fedguv.

If Ms. Jones hadn’t told anyone that she picked the ticket out of the trash, would Ms. Duncan have been able to make the claim?

Doesn’t matter if she got it from the trash or found it blowing in the wind, it’s hers. The store brought the suit thinking they could claim it, then the supposed buyer jumped in. Ms Jones and the lawyer will split this 2/3 to 1/3. No one else has a valid claim

There’s been so many stories of store clerks telling people a ticket isn’t a winner and pocketing it that I’m always skeptical.

How lazy and stupid does somebody have to be to ask a store clerk to check their tickets to see if they won?

Hey wait. I am the owner of the ticket. I lost it. NO I threw it away, yeah that’s the ticket.
