South Bend class aims to take the fear out of handling a gun(IN)

The percentage of women who own a gun is at a new high. Statistics show 43% of women are packing heat. And a class was held in South Bend Saturday morning to make sure women know how to use those guns.

Julia Johnson is learning how to use a gun because she doesn't always feel safe at home. "My husband works overseas and so I'm home alone sometimes and I want to feel like I can sleep at night," said Johnson. And it's not just herself she's worried about protecting. "I have a five year old at home," said Johnson.

But her son is also the reason she was scared to have a gun. Johnson said, "I'm a little bit nervous about having a gun in a house with a small child…I think a lot of gun accidents happen in the home." That fear is exactly what Police want to erase so The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 36 in South Bend held a class Saturday to teach, "how they work, how you load it, how you unload it, how you shoot it," said Sgt. Tom Cameron with the South Bend Police Department

"By that 2nd or 3rd shot they understand this is not that bad of a thing this is something I can control it's something I can do," said Cameron.

Johnson said that knowledge puts her at ease, "I feel like oh ok now I know how this works. It's not gonna accidentally go off. I'm not gonna accidentally hurt myself or somebody else."

The class does more than calm nerves when it comes to handling a weapon. It also helps women figure out what type of gun they'd like to buy. "By the time they're done here they've handled 20 to 30 different guns and have an idea of what they're really looking for," said Cameron.

Johnson learned so much that she's no longer afraid and she's ready for a gun now. "I think it'll just boost the confidence. I don't think I'll ever use it. I'll probably never take it out of the gun safe but I'll know I have it there if I need it," said Johnson.

I think lots of folks imagine handling a firearm is dangerous, like disarming a time bomb or something--men and women. A day at the range would do a lot of good for them.

Handling a firearm can be dangerous, if you don’t know what you are doing.

Just like a chain saw and a thousand other tools.

A thousand?

I was referencing the imaginations of many people, not intending to downplay the hazards associated with firearms use.

“This sounds like a good course for beginners.”

I must disagree, and the following quote from a student in that course makes my point: “I’ll probably never take it out of the gun safe but I’ll know I have it there if I need it,” said Johnson.

FAIL!! ! !

If she needs her gun, there probably will NOT be time to go to the safe, open it, load it, and defend herself.

Is there a risk of firearms accident? Of course.

Is that risk smaller than being unarmed? NO!

Unfortunately some folks think 41 ounces of steel and wood is going to jump off the table and expell seven rounds of 230 gr. of lead.

I show 'em this:

Then these shots of my Sig P226 detail stripped...

I agree.

Any moron can slap a trigger and make the gun go BOOM!

Anyone owning a firearm should get extensive training and learn how to "run the gun." If you spend $500 on a pistol, you need $100 in gear...

.

and take a two day class.

There are some Republican Women’s clubs that have target shooting groups called ‘SASC,’ pronounced Sassy.
They speak of having shooting competitions between clubs.
Men are invited to the practices - sometimes commanded to wear a skirt!
Have no idea if this is true, or just a joke . . .
Men do attend and shoot during the practice.

‘SASC’ stands for Second Amendment Sister’s Club.

““Now, I am the only one in this room qualified to handle this firearm...””

Famous last words, indeed. But that Darwin Award contestee aimed wrong. Pity!

Snarks aside, the claim was a Constitution violation and a violation of Federal statute in that the statement claims a government right to license the citizen’s Second Amendment guaranteed RIGHT TO BE ARMED.

As an NRA instructor, I am part of government licensure of firearms ownership and carrying of same. So, why do I do this? Because the government has been commie for so long that many now need training in the basics of firearms ownership which their families once taught them.

PS Having instructed TSA Persons applying for Instructor permits, the large majority are dumber, more entitlement mentality infected, and less intelligent than you can imagine.

Their “Rubber-Gloved Thugs, with Tazers N’ Clubs”, image masks hides the reality of a newly created class of Kapo’s. This time, they are Collectivist, Democratic Party Kapo’s, and they wear two toned blue this time. No more nasty Nazi Brown Shirts, just multi-hued blue.
