People who are poisoned with arsenic usually get it in increments;someone will put it in their food or drink.
I watch forensic programs and there have been several cases in which someone was slowly poisoned with arsenic.(These are real programs, mind you,not CSI).
They examine strands of hair to see how much arsenic has been injested. I believe a Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer is used in this case.

The gas chromatograph is used to separate and analyze compounds that can be vaporized without decomposition.
I love forensic programs. I learn so much from them. Who says TV rots your brain?

That's just it. All the more famous instances of lethal Arsenic poisoning I can recall hearing about were from long-term exposure to the poison and accumulative effects, not just an acute poisoning. It would be traceable in hair, bone, and finger and toe nails.
Either someone is counting on the public being ignorant of Arsenic and its effects, or it was the only poison they could think of on short notice.
There are so many better, quicker, easier poisons, and prussic acid still breaks down and goes away in 24 hours....

How long does it take for cyanide to break down? I know it’s detectable and that it kills quickly.

How on Earth does one get their hands on cyanide?

Cyanides are industrial chemicals used in mining (ore processing), metals processing, and as a pesticide, to name a few.
They don't exactly put Potassium Cyanide up next to the Aspirin on the grocery store shelves, but it is available from industrial suppliers and chemical supply firms.
The rest is a pretty simple chemical reaction I won't detail here, but can be found on line, if you are curious.

There must have been some wicked witches at the KGB.
(Political assasination (as well as a criminal 'hit') isn't the average murder. It isn't a 'crime of passion', but a coldly calculated elimination of a threat or retribution for a perceived harm. Methodology in such cases is a question of effectiveness while making sure the blame/credit is attributed to the desired parties, sometimes compounding the effect.)

I say it was a pillow over granny's face. She was, of course, just a "typical white woman" who just happened to work in that office when the social security number of the guy who strangely had the same SS# as her grandson crossed her desk.
Uncanny.
